Manor GP could offer Piquet lifeline

Eurosport - Fri, 25 Sep 19:09:00 2009

New Formula One team Manor GP could be prepared to throw Nelson Piquet a lifeline despite the Brazilian deliberately crashing his car last year to fix the Singapore Grand Prix.

2009 Turkish GP Renault Piquet - 0

"I've not spoken to him at the moment, but he's a smashing little driver," Manor team boss John Booth told the Yorkshire Post newspaper when asked about the 24-year-old former Renault driver.

"I've no personal problems with him, but it is unclear what his current position is with regards sponsorship."

Piquet was granted immunity from punishment for giving evidence in the race-fixing controversy that left Renault with a suspended permanent ban while team boss Flavio Briatore was handed a lifetime ban.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone told the Daily Express newspaper that Piquet had not written off his F1 chances.

"Piquet will get another drive. He's a driver who does as he's told," said the Briton. "That's what any team boss would want. And they don't all do that."

Sheffield-based Manor are one of four new teams due to enter F1 next season. World champions Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen both drove for Manor in a junior series on their way to the top.

The team are widely expected by F1 insiders to announce a sponsorship deal with Virgin, currently backing championship leaders Brawn, in November. The deal could see the team renamed Virgin F1.

Booth said other drivers in the frame were BMW-Sauber's Austrian reserve Christian Klien, Britain's Anthony Davidson and Ireland's Adam Carroll. He expected to finalise the line-up by mid-November.

"Adam is a driver we rate very highly and we have held talks with him," said the team boss.

"We have spoken to Christian but nothing more. I've had a chat with Anthony Davidson and he's a very quick driver. It is amazing the amount of quality drivers that are out there."

  1. No CHEATS in F1!!! Hope he never gets a drive. If he does, I hope the Driver's Association files a protest to working under unsafe conditions. I don't mind Piquet getting immunity from prosecution, as they probably needed it to get any evidence but I still think they should have revoked his superlicense at the very least!
Hope Ant gets a drive -- it'd also be nice to see Taku get another shot. I wonder how the crowded track and the no refuelling aspects are going to interact next year? I bet it be the procession of processions....

  2. Maybe Booth is reckoning that he can get Piquet cheaply due to his history and his Dad's money. Yes, it would be cheaply in those terms, but probably very expensive in terms of A leading Sponsor, or unnecessarily wrecked cars during the season.

Branson is probably the only person who could ignore Piquet's history as a sponsor because he will probably be the majority owner by then. Unless Piquet is able to bring with him serious Brazilian sponsorship to the team, the idea shouldn't be considered.

Additionally, I consider both Davidson and Klien to be superior drivers who have proven their ability to develop a car and to set it up to best effect. They should be the everyday drivers with Carroll as the reserve. Then Manor could really claim status as a British team. Klien has spent so much time driving for Brit teams he should have been offered Brit citizenship long ago.

  3. Looks like Manor team boss actually referred to the smashing 'pocket' of Nelson's father.

It must be hard for a new team for find sponsor in this kind of economy. Looks at Brawn. Looks at how good they are and how long it takes them to add new sponsors. It must be harder for Manor GP compare to Brawn. Nelson Piquet will come into the team along with the finance of his dad. So in the end, daddy's money gives junior a second chance. It must be nice to be able to fall back on your dad's pocket when you mess up your career.

A guy like Heikki or Bourdais deserves a second chance more than Piquet. But they don't have daddy's money to throw around.

  5. It'd be an absolute disgrace to see Piquet back if formula 1. Adam Carroll is the current A1GP champ and would deserve every chance he gets in formula 1. Piquet is mentally unstable in my opinion. What he did shows a total lack of respect to legends such as Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda and Jim Clark, to name but a few. He's a digrace.

  7. It would an utter disgrace if they hire Piquet jnr. Unbelievable they would even consider a driver who deliberatley crashes his car.

  9. I guess if crashing had won him a world championship he'd be forgiven by the fickle F1 fans that litter these pages with self-righteous holier than thou criticisms because an employee did as his boss requested.

While his actions were ethically uncompetitive and disgraceful, how does following the orders of his bosses make him any different to hundreds of millions of people worldwide who do things because their bosses requested it, even when they don't like it?

Like telling the little old recently widowed spinster that her house is about to be taken by the bank because she can't make her payments?

Or, rejecting the healthcare requests of someone with Pancreatic cancer because they smoke?

Or, turning down the life insurance policy to cover funeral costs after a single father finally couldn't cope and killed himself?

What he did was wrong, there is no doubt about it, but there are people that do worse - only less publicly.
