Banned cyclist Davide Rebellin and Formula One driver Vitantonio Liuzzi are being investigated over tax evasion an Italian financial police source has said.
Force India's Liuzzi and Rebellin, the Beijing Olympic road race silver medallist who tested positive for EPO at the Games, have both been accused of claiming residency abroad but not paying tax on frequent visits to Italy.
The investigation also involves other Italian citizens with the police source saying almost half a billion euros (£459m) was being held illegally abroad.
Italy has long been probing sporting personalities and their tax affairs.
MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi was forced to pay 35 million euros (£32m) after authorities queried his residency in London while England soccer coach Fabio Capello was cleared after a long investigation.
Liuzzi and Rebellin could not immediately be reached for comment.

It's truly amazing how many Italian sports stars end up done for tax evasion...........do they have accountants in Italy?!
It's all gone pear shaped for Reb..
Innocent until proven guilty lest we forget.
WOW, CAN IT GET EVEN WORSE FOR REBELLIN?!
BUT CREDIT FOR HIM, HE IS A "MULTIFACETED CHEATER"!!
Theoretically the EPO will be tax deductable .......... but presumably he doesn't have a receipt from the supplier?
Do you reckon he didn't pay tax on the EPO payments also? :-)
I bet he wishes he took a job at the local supermarket right about now!
Gee real big stretch there. Lie to everyone about your abilities and make money off of it and then lie about how much you actually made.
