The former Italy manager took charge last year and his new deal will again be part-funded by Irish billionaire and Independent News & Media shareholder Denis O'Brien.

"This squad has huge potential. Our results demonstrate what self-belief and structure can achieve and I am really looking forward to continuing the work we have begun," Trapattoni said.

Ireland, unbeaten in competitive matches under the ex-Juventus boss, trail leaders Italy by four points in World Cup European qualifying Group 8 and hold a five-point lead over third-placed Bulgaria.

  4. big mistake. If you look at Trappatoni's history, outside the time he was coaching Juventus, his results have never been consistent for 4 years.
