Championship - Wednesday grounded by Watford

Eurosport - Fri, 23 Oct 21:34:00 2009

Watford hauled themselves into the dizzy heights of the top 10 in the Championship with a 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Vicarage Road.

The Watford youngsters are catching the eye this term and they proved much too hot for the Owls to handle.

Adrian Mariappa set Watford on their way, a moment of quality from Henri Lansbury gave them a cushion and they shrugged off the concession of a goal right on half-time as Jon Harley and Lansbury sealed the three points.

Wednesday made a bright start and had a decent penalty shout turned down, but were rocked on their heels on 21 minutes as Mariappa swept home after the visitors failed to clear a corner.

The Owls had hardly had time to clear their heads when Lansbury added a second. And a good goal it was too, as the Arsenal loanee skipped between two defenders before shooting under Lee Grant.

Wednesday secured a foothold in the game a minute before half-time as Marcus Tudgay showed great desire to nod home Tommy Spurr's long throw.

Watford regrouped at the interval and Lansbury turned provider for Harley to fire home on 54 minutes.

The Hornets have made some astute loan signings and two of them combined to put the game beyond Wednesday just past the hour.

Lansbury drove towards goal from the left before releasing Manchester United's Tom Cleverley who broke into the box. Lansbury did not rest on his laurels as he continued his run and was on hand to slot home Cleverley's precise cut back.

Wednesday had no answer to Watford's superior play and they remain in 15th place.

  5. Sorry but Laws is ok.. no point or need to sack him !! with 0 Money. no manager can do more.. We can not even bring in loan players like watford have , as it needs cash.. The Board have to get some investment in.. or just tell the truth .. we will have to tread water mid tabel for a few years untill we can get the debt down..

  7. sorry Peter it is not only one bad result they have lost 3 of their last 4 games? the point I am making is that
mr Laws said at the beging of the season if there were no serious injuries we would see some good results.
Sturrock was sacked for less and he did have a lot of injuries including Mclean who before injury was the top scorer, as soon as he was fit Laws sold him?

  8. are you really saying laws should go? we are one point off unted and how much money have they spent???????? one bad result and you call for his head, its not his fault tha the budget he had only allowed him to bring purse in and 2others.

  9. i agree time for laws to go i didnt see loads of clubs chasing him from scunthorpe when he was there but we got him and is there any real improvement or a great signing by him dont think so lets get shut before we go down again he is clueless !!!!!!!!!

  10. I think it is time mr Laws was sacked, he has always got excuses or threatens to make changes . When there were a lot of injuries it was acceptable but that is not the case now? Sturrock was sacked for less and he did have a lot of injury problems
