Valentino Rossi sealed his second successive MotoGP world championship after finishing third at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The championship was Rossi's fourth for Yamaha, his seventh premier class world title and his ninth overall.
Ducati rider Casey Stoner made light of wet conditions at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, snatching the lead from Dani Pedrosa on the first lap and then powering away from the Spaniard.
Pedrosa finished in second place while Jorge Lorenzo, the only rider who had any hope of catching Rossi in the title race, finished fourth.
Needing only a top four finish to seal the title, Rossi's title hopes were further bolstered when Spaniard Lorenzo was penalised for failing to take his starting position on time and made to start at the back of the grid.
Lorenzo, who had qualified second behind Rossi, battled his way up the order but his efforts came to nothing as Rossi settled after an early error and came home safely to win the title.
"It was a difficult year. This race reflected how the season went - very tough, with some mistakes, some disappointing results," Rossi said.
"But I won six races, I was consistent and it's another world championship. I thank all the team and everyone who's helped me."
Rossi has an insurmountable 286 points in the world title standings with Lorenzo on 245 and Stoner on 220 with the final race taking place in Valencia, Spain next month.
Honda rider Hiroshi Aoyama earlier celebrated his 28th birthday in style with victory in the 250cc category ahead of second-placed Spaniard Hector Barbera and Italian champion Marco Simoncelli.
Aoyama holds a comfortable 21-point lead over Simoncelli going into the last race in Valencia.
Aprilia rider Julian Simon of Spain, who secured the championship with victory at the Australian Grand Prix last week, held off British team mate Bradley Smith to win the 125cc category. Derbi-riding Spaniard Pol Espargaro took third.

but before saying goodbye, let me hear once again your synchronized sheep call 'maaaaaaa" go rossi go
bey bey herd of rossi fans, see u next season and see if your shepherd will be as lucky as this year.
Well done Rossi!! Another great title in another great season, thank you and well done. I really thought that it would be hard to top last years performance but at the end of the day you overcame your very skilled and hard charging rivals to prove you still have what it takes to be number 1. As for the race, Stoner has to be the rain master for this year- unstoppable in his performance and more congrates for scoring back to back wins. Pedrosa was great too- proving he can hack it in the rain, Lorenzo- it was a step too far this year but all the same a great rider. Think we were robbed of a close battle because of the rain but still nail biting stuff. Next year im hoping for a 10th title for the GOAT and then retirement or a new challenge because he is facing generation 'X' right now and they need a chance to share the title between them- but also Rossi should take pleasure in knowing that he has set the standard for these guys to follow...
WHEN STONER WAS RIDING ILL, YOU ACCUSED HIM OF BEING RECKLESS AND SELFISH AND NOT THINKING ABOUT OTHER RIDER'S SAFETY. WHEN HE WENT HOME TO RECOVER, YOU ACCUSE HIM AGAIN OF "HAVING MID-SEASON HOLIDAYS"! Well, next time please make up your mind and YOU tell HIM what to do! Right? ha ha ha
Ever since he returned, Stoner PROVED that he did the right thing. It seems that you don't like the fact that Rossi has once more a 100% capable rival.
Yeah... Rossi never needed any holiday because he had all the luck he could get this year. Even Lorenzo's bike wouldn't start properly yesterday!!!!
Hey Joseph J,... Always best bike for Rossi, you Say?! So tell me about Yamaha's winnings before Rossi?! How many?! You have to rewind until Kenny Roberts Sr., so... if Rossi goes to another team, Ducati for example (and that i hope so, cause i'm a big fan of "Desmodiedici"), i'm sure he'll have the same results.
ROSSI Best of all times
abdes you,ve got a serious problem mate it,s about time you came out of the closet.
Rossi is god on a motorbike!!!
Personally I think Vale is aiming for Ago's record of Wins, he will probably not try to go for Championship records - 14 is a little bit of a stretch and he want a crack at WRC, and he may have enough time to beat Seb - but I suspect WRC will be his entertainment rather than any title goals. Imagine all those antics and mud. More like home territory for a GOAT.
No. 83 - as much as I am a Rossi fan I have to admit I think you're right.. Rossi will have probs defending the title next year. Stoner & Lorenzo are soo hungry and super talented.. given the fact that Casey will have more time to build up strenght etc and Jorge is learning all the time I only see them improving.. plus their styles are tailor made for Motogp as opposed to Rossi who is the master but in my view was better on the 500's... yes next year will be very tough and I do worry about Vales hunger and age but with the Doctor you alays have hope...well done to Bradley Smith by the way... hope he stays in the 125's and wins next year b4 moving up to MGP2
Like most of the comments here I agree that Rossi is the master. Lorenzo is a brilliant rider who needs to make less mistakes but will probably be a future world champ. Stoner is only happy when he is winning, a brilliant rider when he is winning out up front, but when he is not he moans and complains and its not his fault and when things get really bad runs home to mummy... When Stoner has 9 world titles under his belt then he can be compared to Rossi.
Rossi is probably the best rider ever, why do people compare Rossi and stoner or rossi and lorenzo? or even sillier pedrosa? Pedrosa is a spoiled s---t head. I do Agree that Rossi is the best but he was always on the best bike best team even when he did the switch to yamaha took with him the best engineers in the business plus who did he fight for the champions’ ship with? Giberneau who was not even on a factory bike forget Biaggi or kenny roberts. I think honda f----d for not signing up stoner on their factory team pedrosa is not world championship material he might win 2 or 3 grand prix per year that will not win the championship. I think stoner does well on that ducati. can some tell us what is ducati budget per year compare to the honda and yamaha? no one else can win on the thing consistently
CONGRATS VALE ON YOUR 9TH TITLE . LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR 10TH
STONER MAY BE GOOD BUT GOODS NOT GODD ENOUGH, NOT WHEN THE DOCS AROUND IT WILL TAKE A GENIUS TO BEAT HIM - THERE IS ONLY ONE GENIUS AND HE'S JUST WON HIS NINTH TITLE - SIMPLY THE BEST
Congratulations Rossi but he was somewhat overshadowed by a sublime performance from Stoner. This form Stoner is showing will definitely be giving Rossi, Lorenzo and the crew a bit of a shock for next season. Stoner for second place all he needs is a Lorenzo non-score as I fully expect Stoner to win in Valencia.
Congratulations Valentino on winning the 2009 Moto GP
I think the vale sheep should look at STONERS last three races and think "@#$%" if stoner takes this form into next season rossi is f*^ked and i for one am putting money on rossi NOT winning the title in 2010, it's between lorenzo/stoner, iwish i could say dani but i'm a realist- REPSOL ROSS
Awesome stuff once again from VALE! Congratulations on winning yet another championship! I hope people realise that VALE is the greatest of all times, even if some numbers do not say so. He has been racing in an era of top level professional racing. He has been the most consistent. He is the mastermind behind his achievements. It's like having Michael Schumacher and Ross Brawn in one body. He plans the whole race, and attacks in the right place at the right time. He "reads" his opponents like no other, and puts immense pressure on them. In simple words, he is the best. He deserves it! Period. Congratulations also to the rest of the riders, what they do is not an easy thing. And without their fighting spirit and opposition, Rossi's achivements wouldn't be so great. Good luck to everybody for 2010, and let's hope we can see some more intense battles!
GO ABDES!!! STONER
ABDES,
WTF R U TALKING ABOUT? WHAT'S WRONG WITH CELEBRATING THE TITLE WITH A 3RD PLACE?!
REMEMBER THAT UR BOY CASEY CELEBRATED HIS 2007 TITLE WITH A 6TH PLACE IN MOTEGI (HIS WORST RESULT OF THE SEASON!)?! AND THEN HE WENT TO THE PODIUM TO CELEBRATE HIS 6TH PLACE!... I MEAN HIS TITLE LOL!!
A RECAP FOR U OF VALE'S TITLE RACES:
1999: WON THE BRAZILIAN GP
2001: WON AUSSIE GP (PASSING BIAGGI IN THE FINAL HAIRPIN WHEN ONLY NEEDED 8TH!!)
2002: WON BRAZILIAN GP (IN THE RAIN)
2003: WON MALAYSIAN GP
2004: WON AUSSIE GP
2005: 2ND IN MALAYSIA
2008: WON JAPANESE GP
AND WHEN YOU SAY LORENZO WAS UNLUCKY FOR HIS MANY FALLS THIS SEASON.. IT'S NOT BAD LUCK! IT'S LACK OF QUALITY AND CHAMPION STUFF (AT LEAST YET)!!
C'MON, HAIL THE GOAT!!
ACE race vale
