Premier League - Managers: Redknapp mystified

Eurosport - Sun, 25 Oct 06:59:00 2009

Managerial reaction from the Premier League, with Harry Redknapp in the dark over the injury that saw Aaron Lennon substitute himself.

2009-2010 Premier League Tottenham Hotspur Aaron Lennon - 0

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Stoke City

Harry Redknapp on Aaron Lennon's injury: "I was hoping he could stay on but he couldn't and suddenly we were down to 10 men. We're not sure what the problem is. He just said he couldn't carry on and that was that. I didn't give him a nudge - I just said to him we would only have 10 men and could he play on, but he said his ankle was too sore. I don't want to say any more, I don't want to cause an issue. It's not about England - he's got big games coming up for Tottenham."

Tony Pulis: "It was probably our best result because we were playing against a top, top side. They have all the ammo you need to win games and they will still probably have a great season. For this football club, we have to be in the Premier League for three years before we push on. We are still living in portacabins at the training ground. We're building something that will cost the chairman £7 million to £8 million."

Chelsea 5-0 Blackburn Rovers

Carlo Ancelotti on returning to Italy to be with his ill father: "It has been difficult time but this is life. I hope my father will be better in the next day. Tomorrow I have a free day and will go back to Italy and return on Monday but I think my father will be better. These are difficult days but after Monday I think he will be better and I can stay here without problems."

Sam Allardyce: "The second half was pathetic. I didn't see that coming. I felt we had set our stall out to frustrate Chelsea as best we could and it worked very well in the first half. We knew it would have been difficult to get something out of the game, but why throw a game plan that is working so well out of the window? That is what I cannot understand. At the moment they are not good enough. Bottom line. Mentally resilient? Not there. Physically challenge the opposition? Not there."

Birmingham 2-1 Sunderland

Alex McLeish: "It was more important for me. The whole Birmingham City ethos, the fans, the players, everybody associated with the club, it was very important for us. It was good. I am pleased for the owners, I am pleased for Carson Yeung and Sammy (Yu). They are absolutely ecstatic, and so they should be because it was a great home start for them in what was a thoroughly deserved victory."

Steve Bruce: "We didn't really come to the party until the last half hour, that was the disappointing thing. In the last half hour, we injected a bit of pace into the game and showed a bit of energy for it, but it was too late. "In my opinion, you can't play in the Premier League and have six, seven or eight, in the first hour in particular, not at the races or playing poorly or whatever you want to say.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Aston Villa

Mick McCarthy: "Sylvan (Ebanks-Blake) has been desperate to get his first goal. We all believe he can play in the Premier League and score goals in it. Don't anyone under-estimate the taking of that penalty in that atmosphere. He has still got to score it and it was a fairly emphatic finish. When you go a goal down, you are glad to get a point. When you go a goal down, teams often shut up shop. They didn't and we had chances and it was Villa who were hanging on at the end."

Martin O'Neill: "I am disappointed. We didn't play well in the first half. We couldn't get it down and play. There was not a great deal of football played in the first half. I thought we improved significantly in the second half. We looked able to cope and limited them to very little. This was always going to be a tough game for us. It was a derby which makes it hard in itself against a side playing with plenty of spirit and enthusiasm."

Burnley 1-3 Wigan Athletic

Owen Coyle: "If you lose any game it's disappointing. We've also lost our unbeaten home record, but there were a lot of pleasing aspects within it. There were big chunks of that game we controlled, we had numerous opportunities after starting the game well and scoring a terrific goal, only to concede a truly bizarre equaliser. We had a 20 minute period after they scored their second where our football was fantastic which resulted in numerous chances."

Roberto Martinez: "(Hugo Rodallega's) work rate was exceptional, but then he is a clinical finisher and to have that instinct in your play is a massive asset," said a delighted Martinez. I was pleased because sometimes as a striker you work really hard and you don't get your rewards, but he got his. I felt the performance was exceptional from everyone, and it would be unfair to single anyone out."

Hull City 0-0 Portsmouth

Phil Brown on Jozy Altidore revealing on Twitter he had been dropped for lateness: "It's going to cost him a lot of money, unfortunately. That for me is information that stays in house. The reason he wasn't on the bench was our business. Jozy was on the bench until 2.10 when I decided to change it. It's unacceptable behaviour, full stop. You prepare all week for a matchday, mentally and physically. To ask a player to arrive an hour and a half before a game is not too much to ask is it?"

Paul Hart: "I think that is the worst we have played in a month and we still created chances, and in the second half we should have won it. You know your luck is out when Dindane shoots and it is going in and we even stop that one. We came here to get a point. We have been all over Everton and Spurs in the last month and they couldn't handle us."

  1. I would have preferred him to keep going , but rather him not to aggravate his 'injury', if it really hurt that bad at that time.
And yeah, Harry should play Pav more often. I rate him much much higher than Crouch

  14. Totally off-track, I heard that Harry reprimanded four Spurs players for being photographed together in a night-club. Sounds bad at first hearing, but when you learn that they were all with their wives and g/f's, and it was a Saturday night AFTER a game,.... what is the problem? Get a grip Harry!

  16. Hello aitch and all,.. yes I was mystified when I watched Lennon trudging off. He knew full well that Spurs would be down to ten men, and so even if he stood on the edge of the penalty box for the remaining time, at least he would be 'contributing' to the game. Methinks his mobile rumbled in his pocket and it was his g/f calling to tell him she was in the team bath?
