Southend boss Steve Tilson felt his side were unfortunate to lose 2-1 at Carlisle.
Vincent Pericard put the Cumbrians in front but Francis Laurent restored parity after a mistake by home goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley.
But United were not to be denied and substitute Joe Joe Anyinsah netted the winner 10 minutes from time.
Tilson said: "The lads have worked ever so hard and deserved to get something out of the game. I'm gutted about the result because they never looked like hurting us after half-time.
"We probably had more chances than they did in the second half. We frustrated them and I felt they had run out of ideas and scored with their only shot."
