Buemi to replace Vettel at Toro Rosso

Eurosport - Tue, 25 Nov 22:13:00 2008

Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi is likely to replace Germany's Sebastian Vettel at Toro Rosso next season, the Formula One team's co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz said.

2008 Test Monza Toro Rosso Buemi - 0

Vettel, 21, has moved on to the main Red Bull Racing team following the retirement of Britain's David Coulthard and several drivers are queueing up to take his place at the race-winning team.

France's Sebastien Bourdais has also yet to be confirmed for 2009, leaving another possible vacancy.

"One will very likely be Buemi," Mateschitz told Autosport. "The line-up will be confirmed before the last test in December."

The 20-year-old Swiss (pictured) was the Red Bull reserve driver this year and tested with Toro Rosso in Barcelona this month.

He would be Switzerland's first Formula One driver since Jean-Denis Deletraz raced without success for the Pacific Ford team in 1995.

"I am young and I learn quickly. I think that all teams now try to have an experienced driver and a young driver, as you see for example, at Renault," Buemi told the official Formula One website after the Barcelona test.

"The immediate past has shown that the young guys don't need too long to deliver results...Young drivers have shown that they can deliver almost straight away."

Vettel won the Italian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso in September to become Formula One's youngest race winner.

  1. Very disappointing - What was the point in giving all those guys a test drive when it really boiled down to who could bring the most dosh! Bourdais was bright enough to guess the outcome before any announcement. I feel sorry for the guy. Here comes that bile again - Smithers! The Gaviscon - Quickly!

  2. Hey Timo GLCOCK, guess you're a ferrari scu m fan huh? You talk utter SHEIZENPOO - never heard such a random bunch of @#$% in my life! Its clear that you know F C UK all about F1 and all you really want is to bum Massa but somehow I don't think he'll be bending over for you!

From Carl, on Tue 25 Nov 8:38PM
  3. arshad assman: Vettel wasn't 20 when he raced for Red Bull SO you are W-R-O-N-G (as you put things) about Toro Rosso and teenagers. Your statement was "Toro Rosso really seem interested in teenagers" afterall.
You are an ignorant, little man aren't you.

From crispyduck, on Tue 25 Nov 4:19PM
  4. clispydick: Vettel was 19 when he made his debut and Buemi was just 18 when he tested the Red Bull for the first time, so both of them were teenagers when they took their first spins on a car. But I can't expect you to know such stuff as you have 13 brain cells which spell out: L-E-W-I-S H-A-M-I-L-T-O-N

  5. bourdais needs a second chance. I think he is a great driver. Give him a good car and he will be world champion. For now, Alonso is the best. I hate him :) Forza Ferrari!

  6. U cannot compare Vettel to Buemi as Vettel like Hamilton won every championship he's been in where buemi finished 6th in the GP2 serie. The guy was 2 to 3 tenth slower then Bourdais in montemelo's tests and yet he gets the seat. As for sato he had his chances to prove himself as a worthy F1 driver and honestly he messed up things really bad through out his career. Why not give bourdais a chance i mean the guy has talent he's not 4 times Champcar champion for nothing!!

  8. I Agree with 19, why is it that all F1 discussion boards seem to be no more than bickering rant coloumns? Can't we all just be mature and move on? Hamilton is F1 champion ACCEPT IT!!! Post 17 is one of the most immature things I have ever seen, and post 9 is even worse, although it is right about mercedes being German what's the point? Vettel is German too you know, and nearly took the title away from Hamilton by passing him.

Now, a constructive comment: I don't know if Buemi is a good choice because I have never seen him in action, but I think we should give this guy a chance. Vettel was given a chance in a Torro Rosso, and he has impressed me the most this season out of ALL the drivers. He looks destined to become one of the greatest drivers in F1, and I expect he will challenge the top drivers even in a red bull next season. Maybe Buemi will impress too, maybe not, who knows, lets let the next seasons races do the talking!

  9. would be nice if the idiots on here could move on and discuss the topics. Buemi is really an unknown quantity so everyone should shut up and respect the team owners decision. It is his money and be sure as hell he doesnt want to throw it away with a bad driver. Suprised that Sutil wasnt in with a better shout, but the owner has the right.

  11. Buemi for Toro Rosso seat? I think its more to do with Red Bull ending its support after 2009. F1 is a multi-million dollar sport. Buemi did not even make the top five last year. During the last test out of the four drivers his was the worst performance. why do you think STR took him on? It boils down to money and not driver's talent. I think STR will also go for Sato. He too can bring much needed finance. Did well in the last test. AND RUMOUR HAS IT HE MAY BRING A DEAL ON A HONDA ENGINE PACKAGE. You heard it here first ?.. Well perhaps not.

From JAYANTILAL, on Mon 24 Nov 9:56PM
  12. seems nobody wants Bourdais in F1 by first place, otherwise he wouldn't have moved in america at all
Neither Honda, Renault or STR or even Williams who had a reputation about hiring CART champs many years now.
    cant understand why?
But for sure Bourdais and Sato would had been a strong and experienced line up but this isnt STR's role in F1... Its role according to DM is to bring young talented drivers from REdbull driving program into F1 which can either promoted in RBR or sold in other teams. Some failed to conitnue like Speed and Liuzzi, Vetter was just more skillful. Bourdais was just a lottery for Gerhard Berger after Ecclestone desired a frenchman known in the US being in the grid.

From Christos, on Mon 24 Nov 9:54PM
  13. I opined last week that I thought Buemi would replace Vettel at STR. He has pace and he is a quick learner. He also appears to be sympathetic to the car, which Sato definately is not. Furthermore, he will probably bring some Swiss sponsorship along.

It is too bad that team principals are so enamored with the very young drivers. Forty-five years ago, you hadn't enough seat time to even get noticed until you were 25 or more. Damion Hill was in his late 20's early 30's when he started, and he won a World Championship! Young drivers may be quick, but they do not have strength of mind and maturity to be consistently quick. You ask about Hamilton, my response is that he made several serious errors last year that put the championship into real danger that was only rectified by errors by other teams which gave him a second chance. Look at Kimi, he's not 30 yet, but he,s burnt out and if he had been older and more mature, he would have been champion long before he was and probably have repeated.

All this is to say that STR may be making the mistake of the year if they do not sign Bourdaise to lead the team.

    From larsonrc41, on Mon 24 Nov 9:31PM
  14. I'm not a Bourdais fan, but I can't believe there isn't a team that won't sign this kid. It used to be about TALENT, and money, but come on, this kid can drive.

From mejask, on Mon 24 Nov 9:14PM
  15. I believe if STR are looking for a lot of assistance when it comes to development of the cars in a challenging year then they will go for Barrichello & Sato. If its cash that they are more interested in then they will go for Sato & Buemi. If it’s an out an out driver ( with a fantastic future potential) its going to Bruno Senna ) with possibly Bourdais. Bit late in the year but he has shown his abilities (in F1) Logic says they should keep him.....My post from Mon 23 Nov …
It looks like they are going for the money. This probabley means Sato will be joining Buemi. Mind you Sato did very well in the last test.

From JAYANTILAL, on Mon 24 Nov 9:07PM
  16. Someone needs to sign Bourdais. He's already won a few championships here in the US. No need to come back over here and race. He's too good not to be in F1. What's up with this age thing in F1? We have racers in Nascar, Open wheel and road racing that are in their 40's and 50's.

From mejask, on Mon 24 Nov 8:58PM
  17. Bourdais deserves to be there...Sato does not belong on an F1 grid. He tears up racecars and has poor judgement....drivers who are only good for bringing money are usually no good...hence they rise to the top because of money and not talent. By the way how is Narain Karthikeyan doing these days?...hehehe

  18. hello my little f1 bum chums it marnio here from peru.
mr hamiltons son say he stay with mclaren men for life. that nice for him but what do mclaren men say? you see mclaren is now german owned. the parent company is the mercedes benz which is the german. the engine is the german engine. everything about the team is the german. mr hamiltons son now the swiss gentleman he eat much cheese and sings in the morning at mountains. mr hamiltons father is also now the swiss man. in fact there nothing british about this team at all. even the man who tidy up the garage after the race has moved to switzerland with his mother. switzerland is owned by the german. my friends the whole team is GERMAN - and guess what - so is mr glock. now you see why the time stand still for mr glock on the last lap. like he in the time warp. not even the people abducted by the alien lose the amount of time he lost on that last lap. IT IS A DISGRACE!!!
