Hills voted best Formula One family

Eurosport - Tue, 25 Nov 22:13:00 2008

Eurosport-Yahoo! readers have overwhelming voted Graham and Damon Hill as the best father/son combination in Formula One.

FORMULA 1 2007 British GP Damon Hill - 0

Over 4600 of you voted in all, with 41 per cent choosing the British pair - the only father and son to both win a World Championship.

Second with 27 per cent were Canadian duo Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve. Father Gilles, who starred for Ferrari, never won the title and suffered a tragic death in qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder; Jacques honoured his memory by triumphing in 1997 with Williams.

Mario and Michael Andretti (14 per cent) and Keke and Nico Rosberg (10 per cent) were the next most popular options.

Last were Nelson and Nelsinho Piquet (6 per cent) and Jack and David Brabham (2 per cent).

A selection of our reader responses (scroll down for results):

Bill Mac: There is only one father/son combination that won the F1 championship, which is what the question is asking.

Rob2B: Give it time: Nelsinho Piquet will be one of the greats - just give him a decent car and he'll prove it.

Mrs Valerie Quigly: Look darlings. How many father and son world champions have there been in F1? So the way this question is couched there can only be one answer. It's those handsome Hills.

superjohn_rtp: The Hills win it by a mile. Graham was a brilliant driver, and Damon's World Championship in '96 seals it. Second would have to go to the Villeneuves. They'd have both been world champions as well, were it not for Gilles untimely demise.

he will never be anywhere close to the tops. or the bottoms.

The Hills at number one? How can they be top Father and Son when only the father had any real talent? For people with more intelligence than to simply look at a table of statistics, It is obvious that the Villeneuves were the most talented combination. Both the fathers were true greats and it is virtually impossible to decide who was the best (I personally feel that Gilles was the fastest driver, but Graham was the more complete driver). It is when comparing the two sons that the difference becomes obvious. I would never consider Jacques to be one of the greats but, compared to the joke that is Damon Hill, he is lightyears ahead in terms of talent. For Damon to have the cars he had, for as long as he had, and to win the title only once is embarrassing.
