Premier League - Fabregas: We'll fulfil potential

Eurosport - Tue, 25 Nov 14:29:00 2008

New Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has pledged that the young Gunners will fulfil their potential after the club's recent tribulations.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League - Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is challenged by Manchester United's Rafael da Silva - 0

Manager Arsene Wenger stripped William Gallas of the captaincy and left him out of the squad for last weekend's match at Manchester City following his latest public criticism of the squad.

"It is a great honour for me to captain one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a proud moment," Fabregas reflected.

"I know it is a big responsibility, but together with my team-mates, I know we have the spirit and commitment to get back to winning ways and fulfil our potential."

Gallas, who questioned the players' fighting spirit and revealed details of a troubled dressing room, has been reinstated to his defensive role for the Champions League clash against Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday evening.

The appointment of influential Spain midfielder Fabregas, only 21, is viewed by some as a sweetener to ward off any potential transfer away from the Emirates Stadium.

Gallas, 31, was himself an unexpected choice to be installed as permanent skipper after Thierry Henry left for Barcelona at the start of last season.

He famously lost his composure at Birmingham during the last campaign, breaking down in the centre circle, and recently accepted he had put in some "tired" performances.

  3. Hi

This is a wrong decision of Wenger.Csec is a good player but he is just worried that Csec will not leave the club next season.Toure should have been Captain eveybody knows that at Arsenal.Wenger is not a strong manager like SAF he Wenger alows players to control the dressing room and football is a business. In Business you must make not only the right decisions but also at times you must make strong decisions.

There are never dressing room problems at Man United as SAF is the only boss not any player.Wenger does not have full control of the team as a manager. But then again his French and the French have a history of being wimps.

  6. Every time something happens at ARSENAL everyone starts on them and goes down the line of not making the CL or rubbish like that.....just remember we have always been up there even with bad results so please start looking at your own teams and comment on them as i know arsenal will do something this season even if its just to get the last CL spot which will be what we deserve!! we are a great team and will be a force in the near future so watch this space.

  7. Just to add to Post #34 (wilfyboy), Arsenal have NEVER been outside of the top division in English football since their promotion in 1919. That is 89 years. No other club even comes close. Forget the Totts. Forget Chel$ki. Forget Scumchester. Forget the Red Scousers. Only ONE CLUB and that's ARSENAL. The Blue Scousers have been in and out of the top flight for over a century but their current run of 54 years since last being promoted comes nowhere near the Gunners'.

  8. to post 30.....your a complete fukin @#$% mate, if you cant write something sensible than dont waste your money by clicking on the sports page!!! 9. Arsenal fans are not deluded in the slightest we know how things can go but Gallas was out of line and personally i dont rate him anyway.Fabregas has a chance to show his mettle and give a new lift to the team,if we dont finish in the top four thats football all teams have times of struggle and you either come through or not no team can be brilliant all the time ,thats the game but whatever happens Asenal supporters will be standing beside the team if Fabregas isnt happy and decided to leave well then off you go no one wants to keep players who may not want to be there do they? It never ceases to amaze me that as soon as there is a small glitch in the team people start to throw up there hands and start pontificating in the teams demise, it happens to all teams eventually ,cannot see why the panic .They are young and strong and have ambition and a love for the club ,one bad apple is not enough to dim the enthusiasm of a team .

  10. A LONG TIME COMING BUT CERTAINLY WITH THE CHOICES AVAILABLE TO ARSENAL CESC IS THE BEST CHOICE. LET'S HOPE THE WHOLE TEAM RESPOND AT NOW START WORKING TOGETHER AS WE KNOW THEY CAN. 100% FOR THE TEAM RATHER THAN FOR THEMSELVES. BEST OF LUCK. AND I SHALL BE THERE TONIGHT TO SEE THE START OF THE CHANGE IN TEAMWORK. [PETER

  11. good choice for captain. Gallas is a professional so will get on with the work Problem is everyone is making such a hoorah about it as if they signed a new player. It is still the same team that lost over the weekend so try as he may to pass the captains armband around the stadium, he has got the same team who look tired. Perhaps Wenger should start introducing the other youngsters, they will be hungrier plus there will be competition for places.players have become too comfortable and take it for grantd, England anyone?

  14. The only reason Fabregas has been appointed captain is because Wenger is trying desperately to keep him at Arsenal, They won't make the top 4 this season, and may even struggle for a Uefa cup spot, and Wenger knows most of the big clubs in europe will be after Fabregas's signature so he's doing what he can to keep him at the club!!! All you Arsenal fans are delusional!!!

From Gers fan, on Tue 25 Nov 11:35AM
  15. Giving Fab the armband has only pushed his price up a few million..City could still grab him for about 40mil. Not that we need him because Stevie Ireland has been putting two Fabregas shifts in every game.

  16. with the Hit the gym comment,i agree with your Lorik Cana choice, only 25 year old, solid and never injured,we almost brought him in for your info, but ther was a visa problem, just like with Ronaldinho before his move to Barcelona. We're unlucky with the English laws as well it seems

  17. Fabregas I will like you to start your captainship with a win for the next PL match.i.e beat Chelsea and proof your worthiness.I wish you the best

From Michael, on Tue 25 Nov 10:48AM
  18. Arsenal need to hit the gym. They're not physically imposing themselves on other teams the way they need to. We need strength which used to be provided by Adams, Keown, Viera, Petit along with the flair. We're all style over substance now. I suggest buying Lorik Cana of Marseille.

From elberethgilthonial, on Tue 25 Nov 10:42AM
  19. so,for striker i'd fish for a spaniard like Villa, that'd keep Fabregas happy, and Benzema from Lyon would do great with Ribery who pushes everyone up front.that's it,3 guys, these 3 guys and we'd top the world for the next 3 years. Then Wenger can go coach France for the next 6 years while we bring in Deschamps wich has been the best and most badly used coach ever.He brought Monaco to the Champion's League final in his first year then saw all his players sold, went to Juventus to see them punished and brought them back from rock bottom just to be replaced by Ranieri, what a joke...Come on Arsenal, let's get to it

From coolworld, on Tue 25 Nov 10:39AM
