Premier League - Fabregas: We'll fulfil potential

Eurosport - Tue, 25 Nov 14:29:00 2008

New Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has pledged that the young Gunners will fulfil their potential after the club's recent tribulations.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League - Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is challenged by Manchester United's Rafael da Silva - 0

Manager Arsene Wenger stripped William Gallas of the captaincy and left him out of the squad for last weekend's match at Manchester City following his latest public criticism of the squad.

"It is a great honour for me to captain one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a proud moment," Fabregas reflected.

"I know it is a big responsibility, but together with my team-mates, I know we have the spirit and commitment to get back to winning ways and fulfil our potential."

Gallas, who questioned the players' fighting spirit and revealed details of a troubled dressing room, has been reinstated to his defensive role for the Champions League clash against Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday evening.

The appointment of influential Spain midfielder Fabregas, only 21, is viewed by some as a sweetener to ward off any potential transfer away from the Emirates Stadium.

Gallas, 31, was himself an unexpected choice to be installed as permanent skipper after Thierry Henry left for Barcelona at the start of last season.

He famously lost his composure at Birmingham during the last campaign, breaking down in the centre circle, and recently accepted he had put in some "tired" performances.

  1. i'd have loved to see Riberi at Arsenal, but he went to Bayern instead. And now,a french man is a heroe in Germany, never happened before.Big,huge mistake for us.There's noone like him,and if there's one big name to bring to Arsenal, that's the one we should get.And a real striker we need, because RVP gets too many cards while Adebayor's personality is eating the team,he can make them all laugh then remind them how little they are, plus he doesn't seem too faithfull.

  4. Arsena wished for a permanent captain for years to come. So, young Fabregas, just like young Tony Adams when he was conferred the captaincy, is the right choice. Coupled with his tactfulness and diplomacy in dealing with the press - he would be a great captain.

  5. Cesc is a great player but I think arsene wenger as just made another mistake. He should heve given the armband to Gilberto instead of Gallas - that was a mistake and now he should have given it to Koro Touore rather than Cesc. Toure commands more respect from his peers than Fab will. Good luck to him anyway. MAN UNITED FOREVER.

  6. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE BEST POSITION FOR ANY CAPTAIN WAS FROM DEFENCE. HE COULD MONITOR MOST OF THE GAME AND EXERT HIS/HER (LADIES PLAY FOOTBALL TOO) AUTHORITY FROM THAT POSITION..TAKE TONY ADAMS, RIO FERDINAND FOR E.G.. IF ARSENAL BEAT THE RUSKIES TONIGHT BY A GOOD SCORE THIS WILL KICK START CESC'S CAREER AS CAPT. ALSO LEAVE WM. GALLAS ALONE FROM ANY BARRACKING, AND LET HIM DO WHAT HE DID BEST BEFORE THE CAPT. ARMBAND BECAME HIS, AND THAT WAS TO BE THE WORLD CLASS DEFENDER HE WAS. IT SEEMED TO HAVE AFFECTED HIM SINCE AND PERHAPS SHOULD HAVE SPOKEN TO ARSENE WENGER ABOUT HIS INABILITY TO ACCEPT THE CAPT'S ARMBAND..ALSO HOPE THIS MOVE WILL KICK START GALLAS'S CAREER, ARSENAL CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE ANOTHER PLAYER AT THIS TIME NO MATTER WHAT THE REASONS. OLD GOONER.

  7. Fabregas, can perform as long as his team mates are committed. He should commit himself to the game not to promise that he is going to deliver because promises are easliy broken. Lets Gun them now. Viva Arsenal.
