Talking Point: Best driver in F1

Eurosport - Tue, 25 Nov 22:14:00 2008

Who is the best current driver in Formula One? Every week during the off-season, we are opening up a discussion point for Formula One fans in conjunction with our online poll. So let us know what you think.

FORMULA 1 Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton 2008 - 0

Our shortlist of five:

Fernando Alonso

The Spaniard became the youngest driver since Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972 to win the World Championship when he secured the first of consecutive titles for Renault in 2005. A national hero in Spain, he returned to the French regie after a year's hiatus at McLaren and did brilliantly to win two races in an uncompetitive R28. No one can doubt he has ability in spades.

Lewis Hamilton

The British driver took the F1 world by storm when he made the step up with McLaren in 2007, finishing on the podium in his first nine races and going on to lead the drivers' standings by 17 points with two races remaining. He lost that chance to be world champion but a more consistent season in 2008 saw him crowned after a dramatic fifth-place finish in Brazil - taking the youngest champ mantle from Alonso in the process. A flamboyant driver who sometimes annoys his rivals with his aggressive driving style.

Robert Kubica

BMW Sauber man Kubica was in with a shout of this year's title himself until late on, having enjoyed a season just as consistent as that of Hamilton: he failed to score points in only four races, less than Ferrari pair Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. However his relative lack of race wins - only one to Hamilton's five and Massa's six - cost him. The first Pole to lead a race, never mind win one, great things are expected of him if BMW can pull their socks up.

Felipe Massa

The Brazilian thought he had won the title with victory at his home track of Interlagos, only to hear news of Hamilton's dramatic improvement; his distraught defiance on the podium tugged at the heart-strings of even the most fervent Hamilton supporter. At times brilliant, he is also prone to the odd error. The manner in which he fought for the title while team-mate Kimi Raikkonen fell apart brought him many admirers and showed a driver who had matured. He was also a threat in the two previous seasons however, taking race wins in both.

Kimi Raikkonen

The 2007 champion sneaked that triumph from under the nose of an imploding Hamilton and desperately unhappy Alonso, but no one could begrudge the Finn his moment of glory after several years as a contender with McLaren. Having taken the title to Italian marque Ferrari, there was no question of who was expected to be the lead driver at the Scuderia in 2008: however he was woefully inconsistent in the F2008. Still brilliant on his day.

  2. i don't see what people are saying about lewis's driving.i don't think it is any more dangerous or aggressive as 7 time champ mike but he didn't get the stick that lewis is. could it be that a rookie with a black father makes all you white f1 fans upset.do you think f1 will be like the nba or premireship was tiger woods too much and this takes the cake.remember his mother is white and she has raised a exceptional humam being along with his dad.all you black fathers with a bit of money see if you can raise a champ i will.

  3. giovannit1980: You're right, for example Michael Schumacher was @#$%. If he'd been in a Force India he wouldn't have won a thing because he was useless. He only took 5 titles because the Ferrari was the best car on the grid. And even though the Williams was better, the Benetton was still the second best car. If he'd been in a crappy car he'd have never won all those crowns because he's a rubbish driver.

Incidently, Lewis came second in the Championship as a ROOKIE and won it in 2008 in the second best car on the grid (with the exception of its wet weather short comings, the Ferrari was the better car). Just because he had a good car doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the crown. Alonso won both of his in the second best car on the grid, not the third best, a middle pack runner or a back marker. You drive what you are given, and you win titles in a car thats at the front. He did that, as did Alonso twice and Schumacher 7 times.

  4. lets put LH in a bad car see how good he is

  5. Pish: Good points and all true regarding Fernando and Lewis in 2007. However, Lewis did beat Alonso in the Championship. It may not have been outright as they had the same points, but on the count back rule Lewis took second in the Championship and Fernando third.

And I can't believe the number of self-important, jealous, obnoxious, up themselves, down right questionable fans out there. You don't come second in the Championship and mathc a double world champion in your first season and then become the youngest ever world champion without having a huge amount of talent. Stop putting your emotions in the way and be objective. Hamilton is one of the best talents in F1 by a mile, along with Alonso who I hate (see how that works Hamilton Haters, I dislike Alonso and still admit he is a great driver, see it is possible to do both), and the most exciting driver in F1 by far.

  6. Fernando Alonso, just by a whisker over LH followed by the two ferrari boys. You can arrange the others yourself.

    From Julie4Fernando, on Wed 26 Nov 5:04PM
  7. CHRIS I - you seriously think any of the proposed rule changes have anything to do with young Lewis? -and here I am thinking ole' Bernie was delusional....

From tt, on Wed 26 Nov 4:45PM
  8. Fernando Alonso. Two consecutive wins cant be lucky and with a R28. Not to mention he's a two-time champion. Vettel is second and a very strong competent as he gains more experience.

From futurealicia, on Wed 26 Nov 2:33PM
  9. for me alonso is a good driver but LH is the best.

From Il Risker, on Wed 26 Nov 2:23PM
  10. At the moment the answer is obvious and by the way that they are already proposing new rules it is obvious the FIA agree, it is Lewis Hamilton.
It took the FIA a few years to change the rules and pursecute Michael Schumacher to stop him winning every year but it only took them part of last season to pick on Lewis Hamilton.

From CHRIS I, on Wed 26 Nov 1:27PM
  11. yeah but they cheated, Massa is the true 08 champ, that reminds me when is Glock going to be investigated??? soon i hope......

From DC, on Wed 26 Nov 1:14PM
  12. Raikkonen. Had just bad luck 2008. He´s the fastest driver!

From Esa, on Wed 26 Nov 1:03PM
  13. What a silly question; the reigning World Champion is (be definition) the best driver. Durrrr.

    From marine.leisure, on Wed 26 Nov 12:48PM
  14. FA, Vettel, KR, LH, RK, FM. thats my vote. aurora last year, FA would have won easily if not for the ducked positions and points all passed on to his team mate hamilton. He still finished 1 point off kimi and same with hamilton. Don´t get me wrong, LH is a good driver. but not as good as someone like FA. (takes a regular car and makes it a winner, an all rounder) while on the otherhand LH takes a fast car and thrashes it, exiting though. But do u really believe he would have done half as good vettel or FA if he had thier cars. (only justifying my votes)

From Charles, on Wed 26 Nov 12:17PM
  15. Vettel, he won in a second team of a second rate car. He is the best driver.

LH, FA, FM, KR all have/had the bset cars to work with. Vettel had nothing

From DaleP, on Wed 26 Nov 11:18AM
  16. i think it is alonso as he beat schumacher at his best twice when ferrari were a better team than they are today. its funny how people think hamilton beat alonso when they were at mclaren but they both got the same number of points, same number of wins and same number of retirements - looks fairly equal to me although hamiltons lowest position was 9th and alonso's 7th.

if everyone was at their best in the same car i would imagine FA would be best followed by KR and then possibly LH. i am still not convinced about massa or kubica as they havent won anything yet.

From Pish, on Wed 26 Nov 10:51AM
  17. But not as good as MASSA, Hamilton 4th

From DC, on Wed 26 Nov 10:02AM
  18. Just click on all the names, and view the stats. Clear winner Hamilton. Shaun C u just blinkered mate, view the stats they tell the story.

From PETER, on Wed 26 Nov 9:24AM
  19. it sure as hell is not hamilton going on the above shortlist 1 kubica 2 alonso 3 massa 4 hamilton 5 raikkonen kr should be higher but seems to have lost interest also vettal should have been in there i would have rated him & massa jt 3rd

    From U R SOLES, on Wed 26 Nov 8:33AM
  20. You are wrong.Last year L.H beat F.A with the same car. This proved that L.H is better than F.A which is a great driver too.
