Premier League - Grant in running for Pompey job

Portsmouth may not have to search beyond Fratton Park for their next manager after sacking Paul Hart, with director of football Avram Grant in the running for the job.

The club announced on Tuesday night that they intend to move "very quickly" to appoint their next boss, and Grant will be an outstanding candidate if he wants the job.

Former Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp expects Grant to be interested in the vacancy.

"Avram's there and he worked with me there. He's managed Chelsea. I'd be surprised if he didn't end up taking it," he told Sky.

Grant has been linked with various jobs since leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2007-08 season, having steered the club to the Champions League final.

At the time of the 54-year-old Israeli's appointment at Portsmouth last month there were suggestions Hart was living on borrowed time, given Portsmouth's poor form.

They began this season with seven straight Premier League defeats and despite beating Wolves and Wigan since then they have been unable to break away from the bottom of the table, prompting the board to take decisive action.

Redknapp added: "It's a good opportunity for him to get back into management. But I don't know, only he'd know what he wants to do.

"He would be my choice if anyone was to take it."

If not Grant, Portsmouth may turn to Darren Ferguson, with some bookmakers offering short odds on the appointment of the out-of-work former Peterborough manager.

Ferguson was sacked by the Championship club earlier this month but began the season with a burgeoning reputation.

    Defoe is only one of the players sold by­ Pompey and while he should be in the
    World Cup squad­ he is not what I call Top Quality
    Portsmouth could have­ got more time from Campbell, Distin should not have be­ sold neither should Crouch.
    It would seem however, they­ could not keep Glenn Johnson who wanted away.
