Premier League - Paper Round: Arsenal in for new Henry

Eurosport - Wed, 25 Nov 08:24:00 2009

With Thierry Henry's name more stained than a 40-a-day smoker's teeth the search is on for a newer, untarnished version of the France striker.

2009-10 Ligue 1 Nice Loic Remy - 0

Arsene Wenger thinks he's found one in the form of Loic Remy and the Arsenal boss is weighing up a £14 million swoop for the Nice striker.

The Sun reckons that Remy looks like Henry and has a similar style of play although, wait for it... his handling might not be as good!

The 20-year-old Frenchman has bagged six goals in 12 games this season, off the back of 11 in 32 last term, and already has one international cap to his name.

But he will not come cheap and Wenger will have to dig deep to lure him to the Emirates - around £14m should do the trick.

Sticking with the Henry theme for the moment, look away now Irish fans: the France striker's handball against the Republic of Ireland earned him a whopping bonus.

France players were on £12,264 for every group stage win they featured in, meaning the Hand of Gaul took Henry's personal tally to a cool £382,075. Karim Benzema and Alou Diarra, who were named in every squad, scooped the maximum £406,603 while boss Raymond Domenech netted £813,207 on his own deal. Hope you enjoy it, mes amis. (The Sun)

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail reports that Nemanja Vidic is edging closer to an exit from Manchester United as he continues to be frustrated with life off the pitch in Manchester.

Vidic, and his wife Ana, have their eyes on a move to southern Europe, with Spain the most likely destination. And considering United do not want to let his current deal run down and risk losing him at a discounted price, he is set to be offloaded in the summer. Bolton's Gary Cahill and Palermo's Simon Kjaer are the most likely replacements, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Meanwhile, United boss Alex Ferguson is lining up a swoop for Napoli ace Marek Hamsik in the summer. The £25m-rated Slovakia international is seen as a replacement for Paul Scholes in the creative hub of United's midfield. (Daily Telegraph)

With the unlucky Paul Hart having won the Premier League sack race, Avram Grant looks likely to be installed as new Portsmouth manager.

The Israeli, currently director of football at Fratton Park, is waiting on a work permit before Pompey make his appointment official - hopefully in time for this weekend's game against Manchester United. (The Sun)

In other news, Nigel Reo-Coker is to step up his efforts to leave Aston Villa, despite claims his row with boss Martin O'Neill was water under the bridge.

The midfielder was made captain in the absence of Stiliyan Petrov against Bolton, but he was promptly dropped for last weekend's match with Burnley once Petrov had served his suspension.

Reo-Coker craves first-team action but fears his training ground bust-up with O'Neill may yet end his Villa career. O'Neill has given the green light to the player's advisors to find him another club, with Fulham, Everton and Tottenham all thought to be interested in offering the 25-year-old an escape route. (Daily Mirror)

Tottenham are poised to make a move for Honduras striker Melvin Valladares after he was recommended to Harry Redknapp by compatriot Wilson Palacios. The 25-year-old Real Espana player has already trained with Spurs, an experience he described as "nice". (The Sun)

Fulham are set to offer Roy Hodgson a new £5m deal to keep him at Craven Cottage until 2012. (Daily Express)

And finally, Andrei Arshavin has been caught up in a World Cup scandal in his homeland after a reported dressing room bust-up with Russia team-mate Roman Pavlyuchenko.

The Arsenal schemer, who is thought to have turned up for a team breakfast in "far from the best condition", was told to shut up by Spurs striker Pavlyuchenko during a team talk he was giving ahead of the play-off second leg with Slovenia.

A Russian source revealed Arshavin, whose shabby state was mirrored by Alexander Anyukov and Vladimir Bystrov, was reprimanded but replied in his "usual insolent manner" and insulted one of the team coaches at the breakfast. Coach Guus Hiddink was not present. (Daily Express)

  12. More average foreign players !
Whats wrong with signing average British players ?
There are some foreign players worth their contracts but 75% of them are just average plodders coming over , earning millions and then going home usually after one or two seasons !
Iff the FA had any b,alls they would introduce a quota system [ 2 or 3 foreigners at most ] but sadly because Sky TV make the rules this aint gonna happen !
The SPL has suffered the most, the state of Scottish football is a joke [ on a par with football in Luxembourg ]
Once you look past the top 7 or 8 clubs in the Premiership the state of the English game is much the same .
Within the next 5 years there will be a European Super League, with probably two tiers of perhaps 12 clubs in each.
    Thats Progress !
The rich will get richer and the poor will become history.

Wife made beckham move to LA. Wife made Scheva to move in england and lost the touch.
Robinho's wife does not like the weather, and the list goes on.
If the managers are smart enough they should also put those WAGs on 50k/week just for shopping. I am sure the players will end their careers there.
