Silverstone confident of GP deal

Eurosport - Tue, 24 Nov 12:34:00 2009

Silverstone managing director Richard Phillips is 'pretty convinced' that the Northamptonshire circuit will host the 2010 British Grand Prix.

F1 General view of Silverstone Formula One circuit - 0

F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone offered Silverstone the same deal that he had to Donington for 17 years of hosting rights, but the £12 million flat fee seemed to be proving a problem for the track's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club.

Ecclestone warned that if there is no deal by 9 December - when the F1 Commission meets in Paris to rubber-stamp next year's calendar - then there will be no British Grand Prix in 2010.

But Phillips is confident it will not ultimately come to that, and admits that preparations to stage next season's race have been ongoing for some time.

"I don't think there are any real stumbling blocks," he told the BBC.

"We're going through the last details of the deal. There is a lot of detail to go through, so if you make a mistake, there's a long time to repent.

"You can come to high-level agreements quickly, but the devil is in the detail. We're very, very close.

"We certainly would like the contract to be for more than ten years that's the minimum.

"We always had faith that the grand prix would return. We've been planning for more than a year; we'll finish the track works in March and start on the new pits ready for 2011. I'm pretty convinced that it will be run at Silverstone next year."

Silverstone has welcomed F1 on 43 occasions out of 60 since the official inception of the world championship in 1950, and annually since 1987.

It is one of only four remaining tracks still in F1 use today to have featured on the schedule during the inaugural season 59 years ago, alongside Monaco, Spa-Francorchamps and Monza.

  1. this is a forum for people who have opinions about F1 GP racing not spell checkers.

I can appreciate your point, and I think there can usually be seen to be a difference between banana fingers and bad spelling, but I still would raise the flag for all those that despite everything have a difficulty. My real issue is with those such as Roz that pick on the more complex words such as too and to, when they have no idea as to the background of the individual and then they make no valuable contribution to the forum. We can all get things wrong ! :-) and there are some words that spell check would not pick up even if used, however I suppose there is a danger that next we will be telling the Americans to put all the U's back into words :-) (which is a pet hate of mine as well as using z instead of s)

I think for me it is getting a balance and I know what you are saying about free education in the UK and stuff like that, but when we are old and decrepit we cannot go back to the time when we were 14 and bunked off, or to re-educate our own parents as to the value of education.

By the way Tam I think you will find that today many University graduates are extremely poor at spelling and sentance construction as tehy are used to text speak etc, so much so that many employers now give literacy tests to all job candidates.

  4. donald in education if one dosnt grasp the building blocks from the of then they are left behind teachers dont have the time too go back for the odd stragler, just cos i cannot spell it doesnt mean i didnt have a wonderful education, there are plenty of peeps who grad from uni and cant get a job. why cos they can spell and are over quillifide. so stop stareing down your pompous nose at the ilitrate coss some of us have etch a good life for ourselves thru hard work and have earned the right too be on here equal too you. swaety

We all make mistakes - even me and there's nothing wrong with your spelling so far as I am concerned. It's the lack of effort that annoys me the most. Lack of effort at school (and the whole " I have paid my taxes since, so I had the right to @#$% it off at school" argument shows a lack of appreciation for the fact we have free education and that right was earned through a great deal of blood, swaet and tears.) is no excuse. If a person has a genuine difficulty in writing, through no fault of their own, then I wouldn't criticise them for trying.

Come on Johnny boy give it up.

  9. not wanting to seem like getting at you Donald, as you are not the 'worst' I appreciate that you are irritated by bad spelling, for many people it is not that but banana fingers etc. But the likes of Roz, who only post about other peoples spelling errors, and then chooses to concentrate on words such as THEIR or TOO which are difficult for some to grasp and may be due to a whole manner of things. Not only the fact that people may not have English as the first language and that type of nuance may be difficult to grasp.

The way I access this forum does not have a spell check facility, so I could spend loads of time going through my posts and correcting all the bits that are duff, or I could just send off the post, and those that want to read it can, those that don't can pass over it. It doesn't matter to me if people do not want to read it, it will not be the end of life as we know it.

By the way you didn't pay for my education unless you are extremely old :-) and I believe that I have more than repaid the State in taxes since. I also paid for all my own higher education on every occassion.

It is just for me the value of a person is in the ideas, views and not in the correctness of their posting. There is a point when people who deliberately make their posts unreadable that should be told about it, and the letter a should be taken from certain peoples keyboards, but apart from that does it really matter?

  11. donald seems you did understand it . not every one has the same intelect at the schools you yourself paid for so me leaveing school with no olevels and no hope . i personaly have never sign on the dole. so that leaves yr tax alone my work force pays tax for the schools who taught your children. so get of yr spelling high horse. and be an f1 fan its what this site is about surely.

I don't want to come across as 'the spelling and grammar police', but I should point out that when I see post riddled with basic spelling and grammar errors it makes me think that the person who posted it is either dyslexic or really thick... or didn't try at school (which I paid for). Dyslexia is a minor excuse, as we have spelling and grammar check - the other reasons just make me ignore what they have to say. I see it as insulting that a person who wants others to listen to what they have to say can't even be bothered to make their post understandable.

From Donald D, on Wed 25 Nov 8:22AM
  13. . . .And TAM doesn't have a "grammer" problem TAM has a my fingers are so fat I hit all the keys at once problem, TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

  14. Well slap my belly and call jethro I believe this forum has been hijacked by . . .

Silverstone is a must!! Bernie should be beaten, flogged and fired then flogged again for not helping out during "these economic times" and forced to watch the races sitting next the Flabbio in the cheap seats and then flogged some more.
