Spanish police have detained 11 people after a series of raids to break up a sports doping ring.
The operations in Valencia, Barcelona, Murcia and Granada saw the detainees taken in for offences against public health related to doping in sport.
"The investigation (codenamed 'Grial') started at the beginning of August when the civil guard became aware of a group of people...supplying doping substances to people in different sporting disciplines," the statement said.
Among those arrested were a doctor with a sports and diet consultancy in Valencia who prepared training programmes, diets and supplements to improve sports performance.
Included in these plans were substances banned in the sporting world, including EPO and growth hormones, and masking agents to hide their usage.
The civil guard only gave the initials and occupations of the 11 detainees, but said the investigation was ongoing and that there could be further arrests.
There were searches of 15 addresses, including houses and pharmacies, which turned up a large quantity of banned products.

What are try bars?
Whay are try bars.
"who's ever heard anyone in the peloton say "he only won 'cause he is on something"!!!"
2007 Tour De France, Bradley Wiggins.
dopings like try bars & disc wheels. it's down to the persons ability at the end of the day? another thing who's ever heard anyone in the peloton say "he only won 'cause he is on something"!!!
dobo.
Innevitable that cycling would be involved, but my original point centred on an assumption that any doping ring would revolve around prof cycling, which I thought was unfair. The Spanish really need to get their house in order. At least Italy acknowleges there is a serious problem and are working hard to find, catch, prosecute and punish riders - even high profile offenders like Di Luca, Rebellin, Ricco, Sella etc. The Spanish authoroties are sweeping the issue under the carpet by overloading investigators in red tape - especially with Valverde. It's shameful.
Spain is doing the things well. Italy only wants to knock out riders.
Nadal? Dont make me laugh, please. Are you watching the London Master?
Pete - I'd look up 'Sarcasm' if I were you :-)
A quick Google has brought up that Olympic race walker Francisco Fernandez has been named as someone with doping products in his house, but was not detained because he was just a 'consumer'. So I guess it will be left to his sport's governing body to take action.
So it sounds like the police are just interested in the suppliers at the moment. Definitely positive news - it will have a few sportsmen thinking twice before using.
I think the biggest deterrent currently is that there are clearly clean riders doing well in GTs. It removes that 'everyone's doing it' excuse.
What's @#$% about this is Jesús Manzano blew the whisle on Viru over two years ago, and nobody listened.
FOR KEIR_WILLIAMS:
Are you out of your tree ! 'Spanish riders are the cleanest in the peloton' - you are teasing us right ? Valverde, Contadope, Heras, all of Caisse D'espargne, Beltran ! Their footballers dive faster than a russian sub ! Nadal is doped to the gills. Thanks for the laugh though
This cannot be true. We all know that the Spanish riders are the cleanest in the peleton, and surely these high ethical standards apply across every sports team in their nation.
Spanish police have reportedly detained up to a dozen people after uncovering a doping ring. According to news agency Efe on Tuesday, Spain's Guardia Civil raided homes, pharmacies and clinics linked to Walter Viru, the former Kelme cycling team doctor. I GUESS CYCLING IS INVOLVED!!!!!
Notice how the first time it's not (just?) cycling they fail to name names?
The average football supporter would probably endorse doping if it meant supporting a succesful team!
Talking of Nadal & 'privacy' isn't it just a bit interesting that his new 'slimline' shape seems to be producing lower levels of performance ......................................
Exactly. Because cycling takes doping seriously and tries harder than any other sport to find and punish cheats, obviously they catch more. In one way, this is positive - cheats are being punished. On the other hand, it is negative, as people associate cycling with systematic doping as cheats are caught and punished with greater frequency and success than other sports. Look at Rio Ferdinand for instance - he was identified as breached doping rules, received a (relatively lenient punishment, certainly compared to cycling) and his reputation is now pretty much untarnished. Compare that with the likes of Rasmussen or Basso etc. No perspective.
Pedro, maybe this is in Cycling because we are the sport that (for the last few years) fights doping harder than any other. I suspect other sports would show little interest... unfortunately.
Quote Nadal on invasion of privacy?
Why is this story listed in the Cycling category? As yet, there is no confirmation that cyclists are involved. So in essence, Eurosport have a doping story and have automatically associated it with cycling. Just like Puerto. Cyclists are not the only cheats in the world of professional sport!
Looks good, always positive to put one over on the cheats, regardless of which sport(s) this was all about.
