World Tour Finals - Federer proud of top spot

AFP - Wed, 25 Nov 12:00:00 2009

Roger Federer said finishing the season as world number one counted among his greatest-ever achievements in the game, given the dramatic upheaval in his personal life during 2009.

Switzerland's Roger Federer shows off his 2009 ATP World Tour Champion trophy presented to him during the ATP World Tour Finals - 0

The Swiss player beat Britain's Andy Murray 3-6 6-3 6-1 at the O2 Arena in London to ensure that Spain's Rafael Nadal could no longer overtake him as the world number one this year.

Finishing the year as number one "was one of my big goals for this season," Federer said.

"And it's one of the greatest performances I think I've achieved. Seeing also what happened off the court: getting married, having twin girls.

"Reaching all four major finals, playing so well at the most important moments, it's been the key this year, and staying healthy.

"Especially after having a rough 2008, coming back this year and being able to dominate and play at the top when the depth in tennis is so, so great at the moment. I think it's a wonderful achievement. It's official. It's a wonderful feeling."

Federer may yet have to defeat Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro - who beat the Swiss in this year's US Open final - to bag a semi-final spot and the world number one is not .

But world number five Del Potro, who has won one match out of two so far, could stop Federer qualifying for the semis, in the third and final round of group stage games and Federer is taking nothing for granted.

"He's definitely in for a shot," said Federer. "It could be a make-or-break match for us to get through. If that's the case, I'll give it all I have and try to beat him this time."

"It seems like he's playing well. He looks like he's getting better as the tournament goes on.

"I don't think the players think too much, are we through or not. So many times we have had the situation that the player needed something and the other thing happened. Matches are always played full on."

All four players in Group A go into the final round-robin games with a chance of making the semis.

  3. The field is at a very high level!
All players here deserve their spot, not to forget Roddick.
But honestly, among all the discussions about Federer being over the hill just chill and think:
In how many GS finals was any of these gentlemen present in 2009?
Answer: Once or none. Apart from Federer, yep he was there in all 4.
And when, apart from Fedex himself, was the last time ANY player achieved 4 GS finals in a year? I don't remeber, but probably Lendl or even further back. It's amazingly difficult.
Now everybody is talking about Djoker and Murray and how good they are. But facit is: 0 GS finals this year. And yes they ARE good. That's how tight it is on the top!
Rafa was in one GS final, Söderling one final, Roddick one and del Potro in one. Federer 4. Of which he won 2.
The amazing thing is how used we are to this greatness that we look at 2009 and honestly believe it was a "so so" year for Federer. Only 2 GSs
Let's all get some perspective. What an amazing Federer year.
So what that he crumbled (in the 5th set) in Australia and his serve deserted him in the US final (in the 5th set). He is still by far the overachiever of the year. Numbers, not opinion.
Honestly: had Murray done 4 GS finals winning 2 he would be hailed and portraied as a new unbeatable tennis Messiah!
Even if Federer looses every match in London, he still is without any possible doubt the nr 1 in 2009.
But I suppose that is boring for media to write.

  4. C'mon guys! Saying Federer is nr 1 because Nadal was injured is stupid... Nadal hit top form in 2008 and Federer was not top form (and probably will never be) and Nadal was better. In 2009 Nadal was injured but Federer still had the edge over others. It is consistency that makes the difference, Roger might not be as reliable as he used to be and cannot maintain top form during all the match but still good enough to beat anyone, win GS-s and tournaments, protect his ranking points and stay No. 1. Probably he will never recover his form of 2005-2006-2007 and will not be able to compete with a 2008 Rafa, but first we need a 2008 Rafa. Federer was able to maintain some kind of almost unbeatable level for at least 3 years. This is the difference, noone else recently has been able to do it, not even Rafa... he got injured... why did not Federer get injured... cause he uses his body much less... They are completely different. Head to head... yes, probably Rafa is better, but Roger's style suits consitency and longlasting career more than Rafa's. Simply because he has a much lower risk of getting injured.

  7. Real Nadal(like my older brother) supporters understand and appreciate the prowess of fed (the greatest ever),as I also aknowledge Rafas resilence and strength, there is no basis for comparison because Roger is the most complete, more slams more everything, Rafa himself says how he looks up to fed(by the way who doesnt on circuit) so all u blind followers shut it and give honour to whom it is due...
Fed is best, hope rafa gets to top gear and give us a better 2010.

  10. Roger you are such an exceptional player, that even when you lose (you are not made of iron) you do not let us (your fans) down. You are always magical on the tennis courts in any surface you simply shine like the sun...
We love you very much and wish you more Grand Slams to come next year and the year after, but keep in mind that you are gonna need a BIGGER trophy cabinet... Well done!!!

  13. Juan P. you are obviously a big Nadal fan. Even worse you are one of those Nadal fans who hates Federer. In any case the fact that Federer has managed to get back to No. 1 at 28 is remarkable. Why does everything have to be about Nadal? The fact that Rafa was injured in irrelevant because Federer still had to go and win the French and Wimbledon. They weren't handed to him. Nadal isn't good enough to be No. 1 right now. Maybe he will be again next year. But for now you should be gracious enough to congratulate Roger because that's what he deserves. And if Nadal gets back to No. 1 then he'll deserve it then too. Anyone who gets to No. 1 in the world deserves applause.

  17. Babaloo. I bet you are Serbian or some fanatical Djokovic supporter. If not then you are simply not worth, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

I was talking about the number one player in the world for the whole year (note WHOLE YEAR). That is two higher than where Djokovic has ever been. Not the last three tournaments. And by the way Roger has been on top for most of the 2nd and the (note again) WHOLE 3rd quarter, but that is irrelevant to the rankings.

Now if we are going by your way for current form, I would love to see a Djoko - Fed match just so the Maestro can prove what he has done at Cincy and the USO once again - when it matters he beats the youngsters ( excluding Nadal).
