World Tour Finals - Murray: My serve was pants

Reuters - Wed, 25 Nov 06:47:00 2009

Andy Murray rated his serve as 'pants' on Tuesday but was still optimistic about reaching the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals in London despite being out-hit and out-foxed by Roger Federer.

2009 ATP World Tour finals Andy Murray - 0

The British number one had high hopes of notching up his second successive round-robin victory at the season ending tournament as he took a 6-3 head-to-head record against Federer into the Group A match.

But after almost two hours of action, it was not hometown favourite Murray who was holding aloft his arms under the spotlight to lap up the applause of 17,500 hollering fans.

"It was probably the most double faults I served in a match maybe this year in the first set... I served pants," said the 22-year-old Murray following his 3-6 6-3 6-1 defeat.

"I made more mistakes than normal. I just didn't play well," added the Scot, whose misfiring serve produced eight double faults. "I served so poorly that anyone would have looked good against me tonight."

Murray, who was out for almost two months with a wrist injury following his run to the US Open fourth round in September, admitted he had yet to regain full fitness but was relying on the Finals' round-robin format to make sure he extended his stay at the O2 Arena to this weekend.

"The one thing that's been a problem for me since I came back was I played well-ish first set of the matches. Then when the adrenaline wears off, there's not quite the same spark in the legs that there was at the start of the year," said Murray, who has won a Tour-leading six titles in 2009.

"I've had letdowns in a lot of matches. I've let guys back in the match straightaway, early in the second set.

"The only important thing is to try and qualify from the group. Whether you win one match, three matches, two matches. Last year I won three (round robin matches but) lost in the semis," added the world number four, who will face-off with Fernando Verdasco on Thursday in his final group match.

"I just win against Verdasco. That's pretty much what I have to do. If I win in straight sets, then, well, a great chance that I go through," the Scot said.

"Against all the guys in the group I've got a good record. If I play well, a good chance I win. If I don't, then there's a good chance I lose.

"The only important thing is to try and qualify from the group, whether you win one match, three matches, two matches. Last year I won three, lost in the semis. This year I could potentially lose two matches and win the tournament. So you just never know."

  1. Simon reed the professonal s.h.i.t. talker,u said the true #1 is the best player out of the GS didn't u?
it obviously shows why ur so speacial coz u can see what others can't.
i bet u'll say he was turned on that night so he needed to return to home so early.

  2. The ony reason the true #1 lost is coz he wants to save his energy for wimbledon in 2010, where he will be the favourate. Don't forget u poor Federer fans that the true #1 just won the mighty valencia open however federer just keeps on loseing GS finals, I mean the US open of and australian open.

  3. Your whole game is pants. Against in-form Federer, Del Potro, Cilic, Djokovic, Roddick, Verdasco, Gonzalez, Tsonga and many other hard-hitters you stand no chance, cause your "brilliant" tactics sucks. Either play aggresively, Murray, or bite the dust with 0 GS titles for the rest of your career.

  4. Csaba - er, possibly because he said that in answer to a Q about his play? Possibly? It's likely.

eg.: how do you feel you played today Andy? Reply: Pants.

eg: how do you feel you played today Andy? Reply: Roger played amazing.

If you chose option 2, then Andy would have sounded like a complete plonker who cant understand Scottish!

  7. robert_hawkmann - Actually it wasnt me who gave you a thumbs down funnily enough - I have no idea why you "know" that. I have only just come back onto the site. I never bother doing that - everyone is entitled to their opinion and negative Andy Murray comments really don't upset me one iota. Andy doesn't have anything to prove to anyone but himself. It means nothing to me if he wins or loses. It's his life.

  8. Murray's serve was rubbish because subconsciously he knew that Federer was going to steam roll him, his second serves are slow and it allows Federer to hit punishing returns, also Federer started to serve better and with the serve working he gained confidence and Murray was outdone in every aspect. Federer won the match Murray didn't lose it.

  10. Federer is the best in the world. The new boys are catching up fast as always will happen. At the end of the day all these tennis plays are lucky little rich kids from birth and have egos to match their tantrums. Federer acts all humble but its clear to see this is an act. He;s a spoilt little bumhole like the rest in tennis. He;s as genuine and grounded as beyonce or those girls from the hills. Fantastic player and hopefully murray will achieve some grand slams along the way so people, keep things in perspective. You are not family or friends of any of these players so why put so much effort into defending their name? Get a life folks. Just enjoy the great matches and get some dignity of your own. I really hope you are all under 15 years old bcos your immaturity would be understood by us thinking adults who read these articles for information and leisure. Oh and i'm from Scotland. Funny that isn't it!!!!

  12. .More @#$% comments. Andy Murray is modest, extremely hard working and i hope he DOES think he can beat anyone. Tennis players MUST have that attitude. He is certainly not overhyped. The truth of the matter is people here are trying to play him DOWN because he threatens to be better than their own favourites. Your all as transparent as plastic bags. Murray WILL deliver and you may as well resign yourselves to the fact. Not that real tennis fans take you seriously.

  13. Andy murray has a @#$% like a horses mouth nd henman lick the bittersweet juices that lie withn as it contains special vitimans......further more murray wouldnt score in a whorehouse of fat birds!

  14. Yes i know its just you Wendy who rate me down, but please stop being like Murray.

    From robert_hawkmann, on Wed 25 Nov 7:10PM
  15. Wendy "Murray" dont find any excuses for your brother lol because you are failing and murray was simply lucky if he won OK???? i can say that too you know that? pressure ahahahhahah wendy let me tlk you in: what pressure? he doenst even need to defend this title? the crowd is for giving confidence not gave pressure.... hahahha what do you think about that Murray is just not mature enough to handle to pressure???? if Federer had pressure at the GR final he would be broken when he was serving and lost in 5 sets??????? Murray pressure??? whahahhaah joke of THE century!!!!!!!!!@@@

    From robert_hawkmann, on Wed 25 Nov 6:52PM
  16. Haha Wendy you are soooooo funny!!!!!! not meant positieve but wow you are the sister of MURRAY. WENDY MURRAY?????

  17. Haha? hear this, "I made more mistakes than normal. I just didn't play well," added the Scot, whose misfiring serve produced eight double faults. "I served so poorly that anyone would have looked good against me tonight."
what does he mean by that? that Federer had very lucky to beat him? woow Murray you are sooooo not mature what Reed has spoken about you. Federer simply beat you ok? his groundstrokes were venomous, his serve was ok, say some nice thing to the ALL time great and probably the GREATEST Roger Federer please? I mean give at least some respect to your oppenent who has achieved things that you probably wil never achieve, you may have a good record against him but hes closing on now and BTW you never beat Federer HARD always HARD 3 setter in small tournaments and now he simply crushes you,
So if you serve hard and play well you will beat him every time? you are just a whole SCUM@#$% who cant even hit a regular winner while Federer just demolished with his presticious forehand and those winners. Please Murray grow up man and i hope you read this because you dont have what a sportsmans have: respect for your opponent and the sport self, screaming while Federer hit an Error? ohh please Murray please grow just a whole bit!!!!!!!!

  18. wendy why can't federer also say "oh I played bad in the 1st set. but I played well in the 2nd and 3rd. I played so bad in the 1st that any idiot could have won that set."

Csaba he isnt at all conceited. Anyway could I care less if he was? NO! Why are you bothered? Anyway, FACT his serve was PANTS. That was why he lost the match. Simple. Course he will say it. Federer may only have been able to lift his game so much in the end because he was under no pressure after the 2nd set because of the rubbish serving. The men's game is all about the serve. Roger was outplayed by Andy in the 1st set.

From wendy, on Wed 25 Nov 5:53PM
  20. And it was a great atmosphere. Amazing. It was nice to see the pair of them quite amicable at the end aswell. Andy was graceful in defeat. Could still be exciting.
