Boss Paul Peschisolido acknowledges that Burton must learn how to deal with pacy forwards after Crewe duo Clayton Donaldson and Joel Grant gave Albion's defence a torrid time during the 2-1 defeat at Gresty Road.
Donaldson and Grant were both on target inside the opening 20 minutes and, together with Calvin Zola, caused the Brewers a host of problems throughout the first half.
Richard Walker bundled home a consolation deep into injury-time but it was too little too late for Burton.
"We are okay against teams who battle but teams who get the ball down, pass it and run at us with pace give us problems," said Peschisolido. "Crewe are one of those and we need to show more resilience against these teams."
The Canadian added: "I wasn't happy with our first-half performance at all. We needed to make changes at half-time as we were sloppy all over the park. We just couldn't cope with the pace and power of Calvin Zola, Joel Grant and Clayton Donaldson.
"We regrouped and we attacked much better in the second-half. Our substitutes got us playing with more urgency and quality. We attacked and looked more of a threat - but Crewe probably still looked more dangerous than us when they got forward."
