Ramos hoping to toast cup victory

Sat 26 Jan, 10:00 AM

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos will offer a bottle of red wine to Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on Sunday - but only if Spurs win.It is customary for Ferguson to enjoy a drink with his opposite number after matches and despite being a relative newcomer to England, Ramos wants to be part of the tradition.

But he also wants to continue his amazing record in knockout competitions, and only victory for Spurs in the FA Cup clash against United will quench his thirst.

"I'll take a bottle and if we win I'll open it, and if we lose I won't," said the Spurs head coach.

Ramos has not been knocked out of a cup competition in two years and Spurs are coming off the back of the midweek thrashing of rivals Arsenal.

While at Sevilla, Ramos also had a fine record against heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid, although his only previous clash at Old Trafford ended in a 3-0 pre-season defeat.

"The result wasn't important, it was just a training match," insisted Ramos.

Spurs have not won at Old Trafford since 1989 and will be without suspended full-back Pascal Chimbonda.

Chimbonda's agent has admitted the player is frustrated at Spurs but denies he has disrespected his team-mates or the club.

The defender has spoken previously of his surprise at Spurs buying Chris Gunter from Cardiff and looking at Rangers' Alan Hutton, who both play in his right-back position.

Despite reports suggesting the 28-year-old did not care about reaching the Carling Cup this week with the victory over Arsenal, his agent Willie McKay insists that is not the case.

He said: "Pascal cares about Spurs, he cares about his team-mates, he cares about his football and he cares about his career."

McKay added: "There is no hiding the fact Pascal is frustrated because the club are looking at new full-backs to replace him, but he would not disrespect Tottenham or his team-mates by saying he does not care about the club."

Spurs have been in negotiations with Juventus midfielder Tiago this week but no deal has been concluded and other Barclays Premier League clubs are reported to have joined the race for the Portugal international.

Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate has also been targeted and talks between the player and Spurs were understood to be under way.

Paul Robinson, meanwhile, has revealed he expects to remain at Spurs until at least the end of the season despite losing his place in the starting line-up to Radek Cerny.

Ramos has been impressed with the goalkeeper's attitude.

"He is a great professional," said Ramos.
