Tykes Sneak Past Shrimpers In Cup

Sat 26 Jan, 12:16 AM

Barnsley banished their away-day blues and became the first team into the draw for the FA Cup fifth round after a deserved 1-0 victory at Southend.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce scored the only goal of the game on his return to Roots Hall as the Tykes secured only their second win on the road this season.

Campbell-Ryce, who spent last season with the Coca-Cola League One side before moving to Oakwell in the summer, netted after 22 minutes with a fine 20-yard strike.

But it was goalkeeper Heinz Muller who caught the eye with a dazzling display throughout to help the Coca-Cola Championship outfit progress.

The German denied Tommy Black on numerous occasions and turned in an inspired second-half performance to further frustrate the Shrimpers.

Victory was Barnsley's first away win since the 3-2 success at Southampton in September and boss Simon Davey will now be hoping to land a money-spinning tie in the next round.
