Osasuna's Javi Garcia was harshly adjudged to have handled while challenging Ernesto Chevanton in the area, giving Brazil striker Luis Fabiano the chance to grab the winner from a twice-taken spot kick.

Garcia was sent off, following hot on the heels of team mate Josetxo who had been dismissed four minutes before.

Earlier, Sevilla's Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen broke the deadlock in a niggly match littered with yellow cards when he steered in Chevanton's free kick in the 55th minute.

Osasuna levelled after a dazzling run and shot from Kike Sola in the 69th and the visitors twice hit the woodwork. Players and officials were involved in a melee on the pitch after the final whistle.

Uruguayan striker Chevanton was also stretchered off in tears with what looked like a knee injury.

Sevilla climbed to seventh while Osasuna stayed 14th.

On Sunday, leaders Real Madrid host third-placed Villarreal seeking to make it eight wins on the trot while second-placed Barcelona travel to Athletic Bilbao.
