David Kirk, who captained New Zealand to win the inaugural World Cup in 1987, has become an Australian citizen.
Kirk has spent the last 10 years living in Australia and said he had no problems with becoming a citizen of New Zealand's greatest sporting rivals.
"We've lived here as a family for 10 years... it just seemed like the right time," he said. "My heart, my emotion, my commitment of course is to New Zealand."
Kirk played 17 Tests for New Zealand and was awarded a MBE in 1987 for services to rugby.
He abruptly retired from competitive rugby after the World Cup win, at the age of 25, to take up a Rhodes Scholarship at Worcester College, Oxford with a degree in PPE.
