Premier League - Injury blow for Bendtner

Thu, 26 Jan 10:34:00 2012

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed striker Nicklas Bendtner's facial injuries are worse than was first thought.

2011-12 Premier League Sunderland Nicklas Bendtner - 0

The Denmark international suffered a broken nose when he was caught in the face by Swansea defender Angel Rangel's boot during Saturday's 2-0 Premier League victory over the Welsh side.

However, O'Neill has revealed the damage is more extensive and, as a result, Bendtner is likely to miss several games, starting with Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round clash with neighbours Middlesbrough.

He told the Sunderland Echo: "He's got a bit more than a broken nose. It's difficult to put a timescale on it but it's going to be lengthy.

"We thought at one stage he might be okay. The early signs, even on Sunday morning, were that it looked as if it might be okay.

"But he's going to be out for a number of weeks now, which is definitely a blow to us. He has a few cracks and we just have to bide our time with that. That's a big blow to us and to the lad himself, who was beginning to enjoy a decent spell of football for us."

  1. prince,we were massively in debt under the reckless hall and shepherd who borrowed heavily on the future of nufc with the basis on future sell-out crowd's and regular champions league football,it couldn't be sustained.
In their defence they did give us some memorable european night's when we took and sometime's beat the top european team's(barca, juventus)i have been to some amazing ground's and citie's watching the mags,or did you prefer watching sunderland pick up another championship winners trophy in some footballing outpost?.

Some decent points but please note you are not "debt free".
Your club is in debt to Mike Ashley who has loaned your club money.
If he sells on the club or leaves he will want this money back .
So , you are not debt free , although admittedly less debt ridden than you were a few years ago.

  5. Beefy, Maybe I should give it up. The thing about banging your head against a brick wall is it feels good when you stop.

  6. Cameron: you were mouthing off about how Newcastle were going to be relegated at the beginning of the season FACT. You had no faith in Ashley & Pardew, now it's all "assembling a decent side" this and "making a profit" that. I can understand that you are both pleased and relieved that your forecast about your club was completely wrong but spare the cheap SOL Take That jibes.

As for what NUFC have achieved in the Prem... please tell us.

  7. Charlie - how on earth do you get out of bed with that enormous chip on your shoulder? Get over it man.

  8. Cameron, I never said Sunderland have been vastly superior to Newcastle over the past four years. Just finishing above you lot has been enough. Both sides are rebuilding and consolidating and, obviously, I don't agree that you have the greater potential. Ashley is better known for disassembling sides for profit, rather than assembling and building on it. Can't remember Ellis Short wasting too much money. Brucie broke even on his transfer dealings and assembled a very good squad in the process. Ashley, by comparison, went for cheap, unknown foreigners and so far it's paid off. It could have gone pear shaped, and from memory, you weren't exactly confident before the season kicked off. That's no way to run a football club and I think, deep down, most magpies know it.

  9. looks like O neill is going to increase his offer for Kevin Davies.....

    HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  10. Tony, I'm not making it up. Because Yahoo couldn't find a pic of MO'N holding his nose they briefly used a random one of Brucie. They quickly took it down because they probably realised they were taking the pi55 out of a player who had suffered quite a serious injury. Whether it was funny or not, it is symptomatic of a wider imbalance in the reporting of the fortunes of both NE clubs. My main gripe is how the media perceive NUFC as the most newsworthy NE club, probably because of their turbulent (some say 'wacky') history in the Prem. Heroes to zeroes, and back to heroes this season is a good story and the longer it continues, the bigger the story. Ashley's unorthodox, risky transfer policy has miraculously worked (so far) and has resulted in much stomach-churning toadying from the press and pundits. Ashley has gone from villain to visionary and Pardew from deadbeat to dead cert for the England job. All complete bollix of course. Sunderland finishing above Newcastle AGAIN would ruin a perfectly good story and the anti-Sunderland bias is probably a side effect of the media's desperation for a fairytale ending with Newcastle making the top 5. Some chance.

  11. Charlie man,
top dogs for 4 seasons; one of which was a no-contest.
When you have achieved a tiny fraction of what NUFC have achieved in the EPL then boast.
And please remind me of the 60 odd point gap between the 2 sides during these 'top dog' years; oh you can't can you . . . a single point and goal difference is all you can quote - we can though. We even gifted you it last season. Not this year though; and not for many a season to come. We are steadily assembling a very decent side here at NUFC, and Short seems less than eager to waste his cash these days. We are debt-free and making a profit these days and the new financial rules will be enforced soon; i reckon you better start arranging more Take That gigs at your plastic place to generate some much-needed, self-generated income.

  12. Cheers Tony, I heard on the wind that Yahoo have hired a hit man to sort Charlie out before he blows the gaff on their conspriracy to overthrow Sunderland (not sure at what) and always fail to mention their glorious times in the premiership. I must admit, Charlies got a point, I can put my hand on my heart and as a Toon fan I will readily admit that I have never read anything from Yahoo about the glory years of Sunderland in the premiership!!

  16. Very humourous, Yahoo. Why not just attach a speech bubble to Bendtner's picture saying 'OOh, by dose hurds' and refer to him as Nicklas Bentnose. Don't know if anyone noticed but when this story was first posted, it included a video clip of Sunderland 2 West Brom 2 with a still picture of Steve Bruce (known for his flattened beak) holding his nose. It was quickly replaced by a clip of the Swansea match, probably because Yahoo realised they were being less than subtle in taking the pi55 out of the NE's current top dogs. Yes, you need to FINISH the season in a higher league position to earn that accolade. And @#$% are Spurs supporters doing this far north?!

From Charlie, on Fri 27 Jan 1:09
  17. I believe in respect, and I know that not every athlete is gifted with equal ability in any sport. That's why I will say that even if he is one of the most horrendous strikers I have seen, I still choose not to slagg him off. Instead any time I see him play I just think of the fraud called 'Arsene Wenger' and I grimace in disgust. This is such a clueless manager whose lack of vision and ambition has turned one of the most colourful clubs in the world into a subject of parody. Big shame.

From ubong, on Fri 27 Jan 1:06
