Manchester City defender Micah Richards has spoken of his frustration over the controversial penalty in their Carling Cup semi-final exit to Liverpool.
Richards was adjudged to have handled in the area for the spot-kick which led to Liverpool's first equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Anfield, a result which ensured the Merseysiders progressed 3-2 on aggregate.
He was penalised by referee Phil Dowd as the ball ricocheted off his leg and hit his arm as he attempted to block a Daniel Agger shot.
Richards, who had been playing in an unfamiliar role as one of three centre-backs, told City TV: "I think the referee made a poor decision for the penalty. It struck my foot and has gone on to my hand. I don't know what he expects me to do with that. But it was a decision. I won't say it has cost us but it has clearly played a massive part."
Richards remonstrated with Dowd at the time, as did a number of his team-mates, to no avail.
The 23-year-old added: "Everyone goes on about respecting referees but it is decisions like that that are sometimes costing us. I give my full support to the referees but with those sort of decisions, unless you are 100% sure, you shouldn't really be giving them."

3Dog. Good Morning.
In your first post you say you don't make excuses, then the last sentence in your second post is the oldest Liverpool excuse of all.
Typical.
And we haven't even played the game yet!
where not afraid to respect and give credit to teams where its Jew like bolton totally out played us on the day when we played them the other day like the best team that won was the best team that day and it was bolton cos al be honest we did not deserve to win but when we played man city we out played um in both games and we should have won both games so yes we did deserve go through man city did not but yes if we beat man u 10 o pill head Ferguson will still say we were lucky and ref were on there side but really man u are the only team who own ref fifa fa and we all know that
the only team in Manchester and rapechester divided are the most saddest losers in the uk cos if liverpool lose we dont make up excuses like you guys do
The ball was going to hit his legs for sure, that is why he brought his hands up, AWAY from his legs! If the ball was going towards his face,he would have brought his hands DOWN, AWAY from his face!
Richards, poor decision my foot! The only poor decision was when you decided to take your hand onto the pitch. Should have left it behind in the dressing room, me lad! Kakakakakakakakaka.
Blue Moron boasting ...
- we're going to win everything this season, we're so fantastic
- we're going to win the treble this season, we're so fantastic
- we're going to win the double this season, we're so fantastic
- we're going to win the premiership this season, we're so fantastic
- tick tock, tick tock
- oh dear, we've won absolutely nothing this year, let's go back to licking the rim of Sheik ManSewar and dreaming about next season
Tha lads ave bin taken tha michael oot of Evra en trainen taday, becos of hes heit.
He came ovar ta me yellin "Boss, i am not happy - I AM NOT HAPPY!"
so ai sed "If yer no happy, then tell me, which one of tha dwarfs are yoos?"
Blady hell, dud he go mad.
Liverpool deserved to get to the final, but don't worry City fans, you can celebrate the title in May.
CITY will forgive it all after LFC beat UTD at OLD TRAFFORD and put CITY clear in the PERMEIRSHIP!!
Richard put up both hands and his intention (even subconsciously) was to block the shot by any means necessary.
It was unfortunate that the ball hit his foot first but that did not alter his intent.
Dowd got that one right.
The Adams clearance was different - a one on one ball, he was entitled to go for it. I thought Decko's challenge was fractionally late and might have damaged Adam's foot had he connected really hard.
Dowd got that one right.
Anyway, Liverpool were the better team on the night.
Ball heading in direction of goal either hits hand outstretched from body or hand moves to it -its a penalty full stop.
Venus. Good evening.
The ball deflected onto his arms which were outstretched. If you call that deliberate, i think you're wrong.
Here's how we can test who's a moron (your word).
Try lungeing forward to block a football with your legs keeping your arms behind your back. When you get back from hospital, perhaps you'll have the honesty and grace to withdraw your previous remark.
we sore when we want, we score when we want, we are man city we score when we want
Tut Tut, aint half some whingers on here - for me if you stop a shot going towards the net and it hits your arm intentional or not or from a deflection you probably just stopped the ball going in the net illegally, so its a penalty full stop, and you mancs were second best in both games so just admit you were outplayed, if it wasn't for Joe hart we would of scored five - suck it up and go win the Premeir league fo gods sake.
Well done, Robby! You've just explained perfectly why Adams' foul on Dzeko should have been given as a penalty! Adams was slower in getting to the ball so Dzeko, also going for the ball, got there first and had his leg kicked from under him. Exactly the same happened to Berra, the Wolves defender, the other day: he was so slow in clearing that an attacker got in front of him as he was trying to kck the ball clear - the only difference was, the referee gave the penalty against Wolves. I'm a City fan and I have no problem with Liverpool going through, if only because City were so abysmal in the first leg. That said, we should have won last night - Joe Hart was, after all, only doing what he's paid to do - and the win would have given us the semi-final. So it's not surprising, really, that fans complain about bum decsions! Best of luck in the final, boys; but it comes to something when Liverpool players and fans are celebrating a home draw as if they've just won the World Cup!
Whats funny is Richards starts his slide ad raises his hands to the side of his body to close the gap that Agger could shoot through. So when the ball hits his hands, oh well, if he hadn't come in with his hands raised, most likely would not have gotten a penalty. As for Charlie adams, he is going to kick the ball, Dzeko comes in and puts his leg right in front of Charlie Admas foot already 1/2 way to kicking the ball, Dzeko also comes in at him, Charlie was level with the ball. Give me a break, you MANCs cry all the way to the bank to get your big checks... We totally out played you in every aspect of the game. Face it, you were beat!
Juan liner
Is tha offer stull open far a swop? Ma team is no doing well at tha moment, an I canno see any wey tha were gonna make tha top spot thas season. Is ther no wey yoos cood help ma ther son. Ya no I'm blady seventy an ai need some help ther wee mon.
if it had been given at the other end you would not be complaining so get on with it and the so called penalty at the other would not got a foul in open play.
johnwhalen66 good of you to wikipedia all the latest fa rules. We were lucky to get the penalty. You were unlucky not to get a penalty. Swings and roundabouts my friend. YOU were lucky that balotelli was on the pitch to get and score the penalty v spurs. YOU were lucky that lescott was not send of for his elbow. And VERY VERY lucky a rich man picked city out of a hat to own and invest £400 million in players. Take that luck away and you would be fighting with blackburn at the bottom. You can drape a turd in tinsel but it is still a turd. No your place.
still top of the league and in europa league, anybody wanna swap ???????????
