Carlisle moved into the second automatic promotion spot and broke their away jinx by grinding out a 1-0 victory at relegation-threatened Crewe.
The Cumbrians had won only three league games on the road before the visit to Gresty Road and they wasted a basketful of chances before Scott Dobie grabbed the only goal after 64 minutes when the striker, on loan from promotion rivals Nottingham Forest, side-footed home.
Play-off hopefuls Oldham and Swindon did themselves no favours by drawing 2-2 at Boundary Park.
Swindon took the lead on the half-hour when Christian Roberts pounced on a poor defensive header and returned the ball to the danger area for Lee Peacock to score.
Oldham took only five minutes of the second half to equalise as David Livermore almost inadvertently turned in Jason Jarrett's cross shot.
And on 55 minutes they snatched the lead through Mark Allott only for Peacock for to tie it all up again three minutes later with a header that deflected off the shin of a defender on the line.
At the bottom, points were also shared at Kenilworth Road where Luton and Millwall drew 1-1.
Dean Morgan's left-wing cross was headed home by an unmarked Paul Furlong six yards out to give Luton the lead.
But the Lions levelled 10 minutes later when Lewis Grabban headed home David Martin's corner.
