Eurosport - Thu, 26 Feb 15:55:00 2009

There will be additional points on offer in 2009 for the eight full-season competitors in the FIA World Touring Car Championship Independents' Trophy.

FIA WTCC-ADDITIONAL POINTS FOR THE INDEPENDENTS - 0

The independents, which include former champions Tom Coronel (2006) and Stefano D'Aste (2007) as well as double WTCC race winner Felix Porteiro, will compete for total prize money of 384,000 euros (£340,000).

The general points scale remains the same as in 2008, with double points awarded again in the final meeting at Macau.

However, there will be one additional point on offer at each event for setting the independents' pole position and another for the fastest lap.

If an independent driver finishes in the top eight overall they will be rewarded with three extra points for the trophy per basic WTCC point scored.

There will be 26 full-time entries in the WTCC season, although only 24 will compete in the season-opening meeting at Curitiba in Brazil and following race at Puebla in Mexico.

Honda Accord entries are yet to be finalised.
