Paper round: United eye 'new Ronaldo'

Sun, 26 Feb 07:01:00 2012

Manchester United are seeking the signature of the 'South American Cristiano Ronaldo', according to reports in Portugal.

Porto midfielder James Rodriguez is the man, it is claimed, who is being monitored by Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouts.

The 20-year-old, who scored a hat-trick in the Portuguese Cup final last season, has already netted nine times in 15 league appearances this season.

But United would have to make a bid of at least £38 million to secure the Colombian international’s signature, in order to cover the release cause in his contract at Porto.

Arsenal are set to offer Robin van Persie a deal worth more than £150,000 a week in a desperate bid to keep the striker at the Emirates next season (Mail on Sunday).

The offer is also reportedly to include a signing-on fee of £5 million in addition to a wage of £130,000 a week, which would be a record deal for an Arsenal player.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has poured cold water on speculation Ashley Cole will be leaving the club despite being left out of the starting line-up that took on Napoli in the Champions League (Sunday Mirror).

Despite David Beckham turning down an approach from Paris St Germain, the Ligue 1 club are still not giving up on the 36-year-old (Sunday Sun).

Beckham signed a new contract with LA Galaxy last month after deciding not to move his family to Paris, but PSG sporting director Leonardo he still dreams of bringing Beckham to the club.

“David Beckham coming to Paris is something that everyone dreamt about.

"Family considerations weighed in his decision. We tried everything we could. But the door is still open.

"Even though he's never played for Paris Saint-Germain, it feels like he's already contributed something here."

  3. I thought we were still looking for new Pele ?? or was it the next Messi ?

Until clubs top loking for the new this or that plyers will still be required to replicate what previous players have done. Comparing this young player as the new 'C Ronlado' is unfair. When he turns up everybody will say why isnt he playing like ronaldo ? then he will be labelled a flop

  15. ronaldo wasnt a unknowen, in the world of football... maybe to fans but the football insiders had alot of hype about him, so think he would of been the same player today, if he went to another top club, maybe hed been the best player in the world if hed gone somewhere else... messi is the best by the way

  16. Another load of b*ll*cks from the desparate football reporters.Utd will never spend that kind of money on a player.Too many times have they paid out vast amounts for players who've not lived up to their price tags &,lets face it,the Glazers are quite happy to milk the club every season as long as they qualify for the CL cash cow.SAF works miracles with a weak squad, but this season they've been foundout.

You know why the Premier league is the best in the world/ because of it's diversity a good mix of English talent and foreign stars or prospects...
I remember the old first division and it wasn't a spectacle i can tell you...the foreign players improve the league. of course we need a core of English players and the UEFA rule is in place to ensure this happens..
And as for United signing an unknown...we did the same with Ronaldo and look at him now....12 million was substantial back then but they recouped 80 million for the guy....
Do you think Premier league teams would compete in Europe with just English players?? Although it pains me to say it i would suggest not..
Just my opion your all entitled to your own!! :)

  19. Another foreign player, 30 million + wages, I must be missing something, that money spent on football academy pursuits could produce dozens of young British players. Everything in football is short term

  20. sir Alex needs some key players who can really make the difference when the tides are tough. so if he has to go fro the new Rolando then that will do some good for the club. the club now has been on the expatriate of Ferguson. so i think that he need some talented player who can really make the difference especially up front
