Physio Andy Thorpe admits Rochdale are still in the dark over James Spencer's injury and are yet to discover the full extent of the problem. The 22-year-old joined fellow goalkeeper Sam Russell on the sidelines after being ruled out of the 1-0 defeat to Notts County on Saturday due to a groin injury.
"James has been getting some real pain in the groin area and I referred him to Tony Banks, who is the specialist at Bolton Wanderers," Thorpe told Dale's official website.
"The initial thought was that it was a joint problem but Tony has had a look and he says it is the soft tissue and has refered him to Mr McLelland who is the top soft tissue expert.
"Hopefully we will be able, now, to identify the problem. We do not know how long James is going to be until we get a report from the specialist but hopefully it will be sooner rather than later."
On-loan Macclesfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee has deputised in the last two Dale matches.
