Late Show Puts Wales In Driving Seat

Wed 26 Mar, 08:09 PM

Ched Evans' late goal handed Wales a 2-1 win away to Bosnia-Herzegovina in European U21 Championship qualifying.

A late rally saw Wales record a fifth straight win in their Group 10 campaign, taking them four points clear of second-placed Romania.

Boubacar Dialida Diabang gave the home side a second-half lead, before Simon Church looked to have saved a point in the 86th minute.

But Evans, currently on loan at Norwich from Manchester City, secured a win that guarantees the Welsh youngsters will remain top of their group going into their double-header against the young Romanians.

Manager Brian Flynn brought in Tottenham youngster Chris Gunter at right-back for Darcy Blake in the only change from last month's 4-0 win in Malta.

Wales had hammered Bosnia 4-0 in the reverse fixture at the Racecourse Ground last November, but the hosts' pacy attack was a major threat early on.

Wrexham's Mike Williams had a first-half 'goal' ruled out for shoving at a Joe Jacobson corner as the opening period ended goalless.

It looked set to be a costly decision when the Bosnians took the lead in the 59th minute. Welsh goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams should have done better with Diabang's low 20-yard shot - but it somehow squirted from his grasp and into the net.

Scotland secured a vital 2-1 win over table-toppers Finland in a Euro qualifier at Pittodrie.

Billy Stark's first competitive match in charge was a must-win game to keep the third-placed Scots in the hunt in the Euro Qualifying Group Six.

But stout defending meant the game did not come alive until the 29th minute, when Scotland took the lead through a well-worked free-kick from 30 yards out.

In a fantastic training ground move, Ross McCormick ran forward to blast a shot but the ball was instead knocked right by Jamie Hamill to Steven Naismith, whose low drive took a slight deflection off Kasper Hamalainen into the bottom right-hand corner.

But on 40 minutes, the Finns - who had won their previous five qualifying games - were level through a superb strike into the top-left-hand corner by Hamalainen after he was found on the edge of the box by Pyry Karkkainen.

In the second period, the Finns started the brighter and Hamalainen went close in the 55th minute after he ran past several players but shot just wide.

Seven minutes later, he then hit an excellent volley after being found at the far-post by an Ilari Aijala cross from the left, but Scots keeper James McDonald made a fine save.

Naismith could then have won the game in the 77th minute but put a free-header high and wide from just five yards out after good work down the left by McCormack.

But the Scots got their winner four minutes later after McCormack took a quick free-kick and found Kevin McDonald on the right, who drilled his shot across keeper Tomi Maannoja.

McCormack then went close with great free-kick in injury time but his effort went just wide.

A makeshift Northern Ireland side was defeated 3-1 by Romania U21s in a friendly at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

Coach Roy Millar was hampered by a round of fixtures in the Carnegie Irish Premier Division being played on Tuesday night, and he chose to give some of his fringe players a run-out.

The visitors took the lead after 32 minutes through Ciprian Deac, and captain Claudiu Keseru profited from some sloppy Northern Ireland play to put Romania two up on the stroke of half-time.

Millar's side improved in the second half and deserved a goal, which they got when substitute Tommy Stewart tapped in at the far post.

Northern Ireland pushed for an equaliser, and Chris Turner saw a shot well-saved - while a goalmouth scramble also came to nothing.

Keseru came up with a sucker punch 20 minutes from time when he seized on a stray Northern Ireland pass to make it 3-1.

Romania are battling with Wales to qualify from Group 10 for the European Under-21 Championship, while Northern Ireland face a crunch match against Germany in September.
