McClaren Backing For Capello

Wed 26 Mar, 04:09 AM

Former England manager Steve McClaren is confident that in Fabio Capello the right man has been chosen to succeed him.

The Capello era continues on Wednesday with a friendly away to France, following an initial victory for the Italian against Switzerland.

McClaren, sacked last year after England failed to qualify for Euro 2008, was asked on BBC's Inside Sport whether he believes Capello is a good appointment.

"I think so, and certainly the FA do," he points out.

"He's got the experience; he's got the knowledge; he's been worldwide; he's won titles."

Capello is set to grant former captain David Beckham his 100th cap in Paris - and McClaren is delighted for a man who first fell out of the reckoning at the start of his tenure, returned latterly but was then left out against Switzerland.

"He has to deserve it - as a player," he said.

"If he can contribute to the team - which I believe he can - then he'll get his 100th cap."

As for his own future, McClaren is ruling nothing out should an opportunity arise to return to management.

"I think I'd look abroad - I'd look at any job which is working for good people," he said.

"I wouldn't dismiss any job at any level as long as it was a challenge for me and it satisfied my ambition and wanting to succeed again."
