Port Vale manager Lee Sinnott has revealed Paul Edwards could be out for the remainder of the campaign with a persistent ankle problem.
The injury prevented the winger playing in Monday's win over Gillingham and he will now see a specialist in a bid to resolve the problem.
Sinnott believes the injury is not of a long-term nature but is serious enough to keep him sidelined for what is left of the season.
He told the Sentinel: "His ankle jars, so it is a case of going to the specialist. It may need a flush out so that the ankle joint is a little bit better.
"I would imagine that won't be a long thing, but we would be talking five or six weeks or, in a worst case scenario, eight weeks.
"The main thing is that he is fit for pre-season."
Vale are currently rock-bottom of League One, 15 points from safety, and Sinnott has admitted that relegation is "inevitable".
