NEW YORK (AFP) - Jake Long was formally selected by Miami with the top pick in Saturday's National Football League Draft, although the Dolphins had removed any suspense by signing the offensive tackle on Tuesday.

The University of Michigan standout will be the key blocker protecting the quarterback for the Dolphins after agreeing to a five-year deal worth 57.5 million dollars that includes 30 million dollars in guaranteed money.

New executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells made Long the first choice after coming on board following a 1-15 season.

Long became only the third offensive tackle selected with the top pick, following Ron Yary in 1968 and Orlando Pace in 1997.

The St. Louis Rams had the second selection and selected Chris Long, a defensive end from the University of Virginia. He made 14 sacks and 79 tackles last season and was named the top US collegiate player at his position.

The Rams' selection was the son of Howie Long, a Hall of Fame NFL defensive end.
