Hodge Joins IPL

Lancashire's Australian batsman Brad Hodge is to play for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League - and will miss the next five weeks of the county season.

Hodge will leave for India following Lancashire's LV Division One match against Somerset and will not be available for Sunday's FP Trophy match against Scotland in Edinburgh.

Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes said: "Brad is arguably one of the best Twenty20 players in the world.

"Although it's disappointing to be losing a player of his calibre for part of our season, we are very lucky at Lancashire to have depth in our squad - and this is a great opportunity for someone else to step up to the plate."

After Lancashire's draw with Somerset, Hodge said the opportunity was too good to miss, although he expressed some "unease" at the situation.

"Seeing the impact that this form of cricket has had, it's important for me as a player to take it (the chance) if I can," said the middle-order batsman.

"The club have been fantastic and very supportive; obviously they understand the importance of this competition and its importance for my future."

Even so, Hodge is regretful of the disruption his change of circumstances will cause Lancashire - as well as his own family.

"It impacts very much on Lancashire's future," he concedes.

"I hope it doesn't affect the side for the next five weeks, because that's the last thing I would want.

"I came here to try to win a championship and trophies. That hasn't changed - it's just put on hold for a moment."

Hodge discovered he was wanted by IPL only over the last 48 hours - and felt awkward about informing his team-mates.

"It wasn't that easy having to tell the players, but I think they understand the opportunity is great," he said.

"Because it's happened so suddenly, it's a bit of a shock - and everyone is left a bit high and dry.

"It's not a state of guilt, but it's just letting a few guys down who want you to perform and do well for Lancashire.

"But most of the guys said 'go for it - it's the chance of a lifetime'.

"It feels a bit uneasy, but there is no hiding away from it that this is a big tournament and it's going to get bigger - so everyone wants to be a part of it."

Lancashire have no current plans to bring in another overseas player to cover for Hodge's absence.

He is likely to miss three championship matches, including the Roses visit to Headingley - as well as a clutch of FP Trophy fixtures - but should be back in time for Lancashire's mid-summer Twenty20 campaign.

Lancashire are trying their best to be diplomatic about the setback.

"Obviously, I feel a little bit 'dropped on'," said cricket manager Mike Watkinson.

"You plan for a season and think you've got a player who is not involved in any leagues, has just slipped out of national selection and you have a good run at it.

"Then all of a sudden this comes around. But you can see the attraction for Brad, what it's going to feel like to get a toe-hold in it."
