Premier League - Fantasy: Choose 'em or Lose 'em?

Eurosport - Sat, 26 Apr 11:00:00 2008

Just what you need with three games to go - a load of big names being rested and fringe players getting the nod instead.

2007-2008 Arsenal Lukasz Fabianski - 0

GOALKEEPERS

Choose 'em

Lukasz Fabianski (6.06, pictured) is this week's proverbial no-brainer after Arsene Wenger said he will play the rest of Arsenal's games this season. Unless he has thrown a devious curveball to put Derby off the scent.

If you don't fancy the Pole, try Paul Robinson (3.29) who is expected to return for Spurs at home to Bolton. There's no real need to spend more, but if you must, Chris Kirkland (7.04) has a decent match-up at home to rubbish Reading.

Lose 'em

Tim Howard (11.83) is extremely expensive, especially with in-form Aston Villa coming to Goodison Park. You might fancy Ali Al-Habsi (8.27) after a superb display last week for Bolton, but count that one as more of an aberration than a trend.

DEFENDERS

Choose 'em

It's not a good weekend for cheapo signings, unless you're just after the salary-freeing potential of a non-playing stooge like Aaron Mokoena (1.53).

This column is a massive fan of Stephen Kelly (5.02), although the fact that he is still this cheap despite playing 35 times might suggest he isn't very good. Still, with a reserve Liverpool side visiting St Andrew's, Kelly might pick up some points.

If you have money to spend, spend it on Gael Clichy (11.54), who is bang in form and will kill Derby to pieces, and then kill them again.

Lose 'em

Pascal Chimbonda (9.33) once handed in a transfer request on his way off the pitch at the end of the season, so don't expect the Frenchman to bust a gut in this dead rubber (for Spurs, at least) against Bolton.

Normally, 9.76 for Patrice Evra would look like a bargain. But not when it's Chelsea away. Plus there's a chance that Fergie will shuffle his pack with Tuesday's Champions League game in mind.

MIDFIELDERS

Choose 'em

Of course it's easy just to pick whoever's playing Derby, but come on - can you imagine Arsenal scoring less than five? As such, Cesc Fabregas (18.34) is your boy for this weekend.

Last weekend John Utaka (10.76) rolled back the months to when he was Fantasy royalty. He has gone up in value, but still looks a decent punt for the visit of Blackburn.

Let's rummage around the bargain bin... Steven Reid? No. Tamir Cohen? Get out of here. Ah! Mehdi Nafti (2.58)! He'll do.

Lose 'em

Frank Lampard (17.34) will not play this weekend after the sad news of his mother's death.

Move away from the Hleb (6.54). The Belarussian's season went downhill faster than Steve Brookstein's singing career, and he is now suspended until next season after belting a Reading player.

Steven Gerrard (20.16) WILL NOT PLAY against Birmingham. He just won't. Drop him.

STRIKERS

Choose 'em

It's just a hunch, but doesn't Theo Walcott (7.16) seem like the kind of player who would absolutely murder Derby (that's three times the Rams have been exterminated in this column)? Wenger is determined to use his youngsters, so Theo has every chance of starting.

And while we're on the subject of slightly random World Cup squad members, how about Peter Crouch (10.18)? Not cheap, but certain to play and likely to score. And 2002 Irish star Robbie Keane (12.25) seems like a fair bet to hit the onion bag against Bolton.

Lose 'em

The suspended Kevin Davies (9.70) is obviously worth avoiding, as is the certain-to-be-rested Fernando Torres (18.14).

Ashley Young (22.27) is suffering the standard over-inflation that follows a big performance. Most expensive forward? Madness.

Didier Drogba (15.21) did not look at all fit against Liverpool on Tuesday and kept falling over. He might recover to blast a brace past United, but then again he might not.
