Dan Harrington is definitely one of the most remarkable players to have ever won the WSOP.
The 63-year-old poker pro from the USA has helped shape the modern poker game like hardly any other.
Harrington began playing poker in the early eighties. He had previously enjoyed success as a chess master and backgammon player. One of his first poker haunts was the legendary Mayfair Club in New York.
At that time, there was an infamous group of young poker pros who used to frequently rub shoulders there. They trained, played and discussed poker together.
This group included Erik Seidel - eight-time winner of WSOP bracelets to date - and Howard Lederer, who became known as "The Professor).
In this environment, Harrington also developed into one of the leading poker players.
In 1995, Harrington won the Main Event at the WSOP, netting himself a million dollars. In 2007, he even won a WPT Championship event and is therefore one of the few players to achieve both WSOP and WPT victories. He also made it to the final table of the 1987, 2003 and 2004 WSOP Main Events. In the meantime, it is estimated that he has amassed tournament winnings of more than $6.5 million.
This poker pro is known for his tight and level-headed play. He also conveys these virtues in his series of poker books dealing with tournament play.
There are three books in the series, but Harrington on Hold'em Vols. 1-3 could really have fit between the covers of two. The first book deals with playing at a full table and the early phases of a tournament. In the second book, he looks at specific tactics and how to play when only a few players are left. The last edition simply presents poker quizzes which should help the reader to combat the weaknesses in his own game.
The author goes through the thoughts and decision-making processes of the best poker players in the world in a step-by-step manner. Each chapter ends with examples presented in the form of a quiz.
Harrington on Hold'em thus makes it possible for the reader to gradually develop his tournament poker.
In doing so, Harrington has succeeded in getting to the heart of modern poker. His expert advice has decisively advanced tournament poker in recent years and catapulted many players to a significantly better level of play.
Poker experts have spent many hours discussing Harrington's methods in detail. Many of the new developments relating to tournament tactics can be seen as direct countermeasures to his tips.
His new series of books on the cash game will finally be available in the coming weeks. Dan Harrington is expected to be delivering absolute bestsellers once again - books which no ambitious poker player will be able to do without.
