FA Cup - Injured Jagielka to miss final

Eurosport - Sun, 26 Apr 08:50:00 2009

Everton defender Phil Jagielka needs an operation on a knee injury and will miss next month's FA Cup final against Chelsea.

The England international, who scored the winning penalty in the semi-final shootout against Manchester United, was carried off on a stretcher in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League defeat by Manchester City at Goodison Park.

"The scan has unfortunately confirmed what we already feared... that Phil will be out for the rest of the season," club physio Mike Rathbone told the club's official website.

"He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery in around 10 days time when the swelling has gone down. It's too early to estimate a return to action."

The latest setback for Everton follows an almost identical injury to midfielder Mikel Arteta in February and the long-term absence of forwards Yakubu and Victor Anichebe.

The FA Cup final takes place at Wembley on May 30.

  13. I'm supporting Everton for the final.
They deserve the win because they play like a proper "team".

  14. Its that low life football mentality rises to the surface time and time again.

Any player deserves encouragement and support from real sports fans irrespective of what team they follow.

Watch the marathon this morning and learn the lesson that sport can provide if we simply grasp the opportunity.

good - he shouldn't be there anyway. Man U should have won. Everton couldn't even play with their 'teenagers'. Jagielka should have had a penalty against him. Moaning Moyes got into the ref;s head. He has talked himself out of the OT job, anyway!
