Everton defender Phil Jagielka needs an operation on a knee injury and will miss next month's FA Cup final against Chelsea.
The England international, who scored the winning penalty in the semi-final shootout against Manchester United, was carried off on a stretcher in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League defeat by Manchester City at Goodison Park.
"The scan has unfortunately confirmed what we already feared... that Phil will be out for the rest of the season," club physio Mike Rathbone told the club's official website.
"He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery in around 10 days time when the swelling has gone down. It's too early to estimate a return to action."
The latest setback for Everton follows an almost identical injury to midfielder Mikel Arteta in February and the long-term absence of forwards Yakubu and Victor Anichebe.
The FA Cup final takes place at Wembley on May 30.

@rhysbuddy - you sick twisted bust@rd; taking joy out of someones plight. What a oxymoron and a hypocrite , saying YNWA and yet you laugh at Jags injury- I hope YOU do walk alone!
Anyway good luck to Jag!
Up the Chelsea!
Our best striker, best midfielder and best defender out for the season... Timmy Howard should be watching his back.
I'm a Liverpool fan and just think this is horrible. A great player who has been solid all season and doesn't deserve this at all. Wouldn't mind seeing the lad as England right back too, he deserves it.
Damn unfair on the lad.
i am a chelsea fan and i feel sorry for jagielka, he has made a huge impact on everton this season as have many other everton stars. Good luck for the future jag.
