Premier League - Managers: Redknapp fury at pen

Eurosport - Sun, 26 Apr 10:38:00 2009

Reaction from around the Premier League, with Harry Redknapp bemoaning a "terrible" penalty award for Manchester United against Tottenham.

2008-2009 Referee Howard Webb waves away protests after awarding Manchester United a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur - 0

Manchester United 5-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Alex Ferguson: "We were too slow, too casual in the first half. We needed to speed up in the second half and Tevez was responsible for that. He got the rest of the team playing. We had to get the first goal quite early. It wasn't a foregone conclusion after that by any means but it gave us impetus. (The penalty) It was a bit fortunate. Football is funny like that. Last week we were knocked out of the FA Cup by not getting a penalty kick. It doesn't deflect from our second-half performance."

Harry Redknapp: "The referee made a terrible mistake. The players can't believe it because it changed the face of the game. United were not going to win unless something like that happened. You should have technology. The fourth official should be watching the TV monitor and talking to the referee. The guy has not done it on purpose, it is just a bad decision but it was the turning point. Howard (Webb) is supposed to be our best ref, but if he's the best I'd hate to see the worst."

West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

Guus Hiddink: "I have rested some players but if I had suggested that to Frank (Lampard), well, I didn't even talk to him about it. He would have looked at me as if to say, 'Why are you doing that?' These guys with big personalities, they want to play every game. Maybe some time in the near future I will have to tell him he's not going to play, but without looking at him I think."

Gianfranco Zola: "The fans didn't forgive (Lampard) for leaving. Frank is a very good professional, a very good boy and it makes me sorry to think he has a problem with this crowd. Kieron Dyer applied himself well and had to work harder than normal. It's another step forward for him. He had a great chance. It was a great ball to him. It went to his left which is not his best foot but Petr Cech made a good save."

Hull City 1-3 Liverpool

Phil Brown: "I have no excuses for (Caleb Folan's) sending off. I feel it was justified and it will be dealt with in-house. That killed us, 10 against 11, and Caleb made it a little bit easier for them. We were having to pick players up at half-time after an injustice was done. We knew it was going to be tough and somebody has let them off the hook in the first half. I cannot see a free-kick there."

Rafa Benitez: "Everybody is very pleased for (Dirk Kuyt). Kuyt is a fantastic professional and is always working hard to score. He was very positive and we are really pleased for him. We were working very hard and we have to be satisfied. We were nervous because the pitch was terrible. The pitch was dry and the grass was long - it was difficult to pass the ball. You can make mistakes but it is part of the game and we have to accept the situation."

Everton 1-2 Manchester City

David Moyes: "It was a penalty. It hits Richard Dunne in the arm - he doesn't mean it but if it stops a pass going to our player in the box with his arm it's a penalty kick. I also think the one in the box when (Vincent) Kompany had his arms around Fellaini's neck could have been looked at and questioned. I think the last week has caught up with us. We weren't quite there."

Mark Hughes on a bust-up with Micah Richards: "These things happen time and time again at training grounds. Our training ground is a little bit open and every day we have long-range lenses pointed in our direction. I didn't pay much attention to the incident at the time. It was something and nothing and it didn't affect Micah's performance, I thought he was excellent. If it had been a serious incident he wouldn't have played today so that shows you the strength of it."

West Bromwich Albion 3-0 Sunderland

Tony Mowbray: "For me it is about the next game, not the bigger picture. It is an almost impossible job that we face but strange things can happen in football. We now move on to Tottenham. We know they will allow us to play and that we will get chances. If we can win that game, then we have got Wigan at home and if we win that, maybe you will all write that the Great Escape can happen again as it did four years ago."

Ricky Sbragia: "We were so poor overall. We seemed to have 11 individuals out there. West Brom played very well and caused us problems and we got what we deserved - absolutely nothing. It is hard to explain the way we played. Last week we were committed and worked very hard against Hull and were very difficult to beat. Today we were nothing like that and the players were told in no uncertain terms after the game that it was not good enough. It was not acceptable."

Fulham 1-0 Stoke City

Roy Hodgson: "It would be a great honour and a tribute to the work the players have put in this year if they could sneak this seventh place. But the competition for that place is still very strong. We can't rule out Manchester City, Tottenham, Wigan and West Ham. Any one of those four, plus ourselves, can take that seventh place and it will all depend on who can keep their season going to the death and get the right results."

Tony Pulis: "I don't think both teams created a lot of chances. We certainly didn't. We had about four chances with Ryan Shawcross and Ricardo Fuller having the best of them with headers. But we didn't hit the target. Fulham had about as many chances as us and it wasn't a game littered with them. We are desperate to get to 40 points. We came here and gave Fulham game without six regular players."

Bolton 1-1 Aston Villa

Gary Megson: "This result helps us along the way and another win should see us stay up. We did okay today without playing champagne football. What we did do well was that we worked our socks off. I know Villa have taken the lead 13 times this season, won 11 of them and drawn two. Given that record we did well to get back in the game against a top-class side."

Martin O'Neill: "Overall I have been delighted with the team and on the whole we are playing pretty well. We got in front before half-time which, on the balance of play, we deserved. We were in decent control in the second half, then they equalised. That is something that can always happen. It was disappointing to concede the goal but we have gained a point on Everton and retained fifth spot. By league table definition it means we have improved on last season."

  1. post 152 and 154 - you clever little boys/girls - give yourselves a pat on the back. tell me, why aren't Yahoo and The Sun (newspaper for retards) talking about both of Blackburns disgraceful goals at the weekend? both fouls and one offside? because it wouldn't get people talking and buying into the hype and lies they peddle. the truth that you CANNOT swallow is the fact the refs make mistakes at every ground up and down the country most if not every weekend. more pressure for refs at the top 4 grounds, but opposing managers should have learnt that whinging about it gets you nowhere, but fighting back on the pitch gets you respect and results. Liverfool have won against 10 men because of @#$% ref decisions so often this season - the two yellows for the Hull player were a total joke and what happend? the first one led to a goal. but your choosing not to talk about that. This shows all Utd fans who opposing fans whith jealousy issues think are the real deal - MANCHESTER UNITED.
