Former champion Shaun Murphy fought back to 8-8 against Ding Junhui heading into their World Championship second-round deciding session at the Crucible.
Trailing 5-3 from the first session, Murphy needed a strong start to claw back Ding's lead - and the 2005 champion supplied one with gusto.
Seizing on some uncharacteristic errors from his opponent, Murphy romped to breaks of 72 and 100 to bring the tie level on five frames apiece.
Ding fought back however, taking the next two frames without a significant break, relying on gritty safety play to snatch the 12th.
A cat-and-mouse chase followed, with breaks of 64 and 42 enough to claim the next frame for Murphy only for Ding to hit back again in the 14th to re-establish his two-frame lead at 8-6.
Murphy dug in for the final two frames of the second session, snaffling both after more mistakes from Ding.
The Chinese will need a much more consistent performance to better Murphy when they play to a close on Monday evening.
The winner will take on Ali Carter or Joe Perry in the last eight.
Ding Junhui will carry a 5-3 lead into the second day of his World Championship match with former tournament winner Shaun Murphy.
The second-round match was expected to be littered with heavy breaks, but it was an uncharacteristically slow start to their opening session with tension palpable inside the Crucible.
2005 champion Murphy claimed the opener with a break of 53 only for Ding to win the next two frames, a run of 68 helping the Chinese player into a 2-1 lead.
Murphy pocketed the fourth frame to draw level, but Ding began to score heavily when they resumed after the mid-session interval.
Delightful runs of 103 and 78 helped the UK champion establish a 4-2 lead. Murphy made it 4-3 before Ding won a scrappy last frame to snare an overnight lead.
