Taniela Rawaqa, Netani Talei, Akapusi Qera and Isoa Neivua all scored second half tries as the Fijians ran out comfortable winners after trailing 15-3 at the break.

Luke Thompson and Goshi Tachikawa touched down for Japan, who ran out of steam in the second term after dominating the first half.

Fiji's win was their first in the tournament after their 8-3 loss to Samoa last weekend, while Japan were playing their first match of the season.

Fiji and Japan are drawn in the same group at this year's World Cup in France and the teams are using the Pacific Nations Cup to prepare for that tournament.

Samoa, Tonga, Australia A and the Junior All Blacks players also have teams in a competition that was established last year as part of an IRB plan to narrow the widening gap between the top nations and the also-rans of world rugby.

Winger Lachlan Turner scored a hat-trick of tries in Australia A's 60-15 demolition of Tonga in Sydney on Friday.

Centre Ryan Cross scored two tries while fullback Clinton Schifcofske piled on 23 points from a try, two penalties and six conversions.

Winger Seti Kiole and centre Kaiongo Tupou both scored tries for Tonga, who were still in the game at halftime when they trailed 13-8 before conceding seven tries in the second term.
