Walsall goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin has signed a new one-year contract with the League One club as they continue preparing for next season.Gilmartin, who will celebrate his 21st birthday this week, understands that he will remain as the second choice stopper behind Clayton Ince, but is hoping to make his mark on the first-team next season.

"I am very happy to sign this new contract. Last season was a tough one, but (goalkeeping coach) Eric McManus obviously sees potential in me," Gilmartin told the club's official website.

"I enjoy working closely with Eric and Clayton (Ince) and I can only learn from them. I want to continue improving and hopefully grab my first-team chance with both hands if and when it comes along.

"There is sure to be a chance for me somewhere along the line and it is up to me to take it and show the gaffer what I can do."
