Andy Butler believes striker Paul Hayes can play a major role in helping Scunthorpe win promotion back into the Championship next season.Former Barnsley man Hayes came in for some criticism during this season, but five goals in the last three games of the campaign have given United cause for optimism going into League One.

Butler told the club's official website: "He's worked hard all season and didn't get the rewards he deserved.

"The fans started to get on his back, which was uncalled for in my view, but now he is back in the team and has staked a claim for a place next season.

"We all know what he is capable of, he was a good player when he left and he came back a good player.

"Players like him will be key for us next season."
