Luc Alphand won the Rali Transiberico, the first victory of the FIA Cross-Country World Cup season for Repsol Mitsubishi.

Alphand finished fourth and third in Sunday's two special stages of 165km around Lisbon, both won by Nani Roma, to finish over 35 minutes ahead of runner-up Nasser Al-Attiyah in the second rally of 2008.

Qatari driver Al-Attiyah exchanged positions with Alphand on the two specials.

"As expected, we found all types of ground and our Montero Evolution MPR13 was always at a very high level," Aphand said afterwards.

"Our plan for this rally was not to wait for others to make mistakes, but we attacked as hard as we could right from the start."

Dakar legend Stéphane Peterhansel was second in both specials but had to settle for fifth overall behind Filipe Campos and Helder Oliveira.

Roma's chances of overall victory were ended by a broken alternator on Saturday, but he bowed out in style.

"Today we won both stages again, so we're still very competitive in spite of having lost our chance of winning," he said.

"What happened to us is a shame because we were running a great race and the new car was truly competitive. But these things happen and we were aware that these problems could arise with a new car.

"Our conclusions after our experience with the MPR14 Diesel are good: the car is very competitive. We've performed at a very high level when the MPR14 Diesel still hasn't reached its full potential."
