McBryde names inexperienced side

Wales caretaker coach Robin McBryde has handed debuts to Scarlets duo Daniel Evans and Jonathan Davies in an inexperienced side to face Canada on Saturday.

McBryde, standing in for Warren Gatland who is assistant to Lions head coach Ian McGeechan, also has three uncapped players on the bench in Blues' Sam Warburton and Ospreys duo Craig Mitchell and Jonathan Spratt.

Ryan Jones captains the team at number eight while his Ospreys team-mate Duncan Jones, capped 52 times, brings experience to the front row.

Cardiff Blues-bound Gareth Cooper will lead the backs on his 41st appearance, with 14 caps between the rest of the backline.

Full-back Evans and outside centre Davies are the new recruits but McBryde insisted both fully deserved their place on the team.

"They're there on merit really," McBryde said. "Daniel Evans finished the season off strongly with a couple of good performances, he's fitted in well.

"Jonathan Davies has been a consistent performer for the Scarlets through the year, so I've had no hesitation really in giving them their first caps."

Cooper will form a half-back partnership with Ospreys' Dan Biggar, keeping out Sale's Dwayne Peel at scrum-half and Blues' more experienced number 10 Nicky Robinson, who are given places on the bench.

"Perhaps the most difficult selection was at half-back," McBryde said.

"We have four good contenders for the jersey and both Nicky and Dwayne have been unlucky to miss out, but they could yet have something to say about how the Test goes on Saturday."
