Great Britain have on Thursday named their largest squad since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 for this summer's Games in Beijing.

The British Olympic Association will select 43 rowers in total in 12 boats for these Games, which are the first since Moscow 1980 that do not feature either Sir Steve Redgrave or Sir Matthew Pinsent.

The team are setting a minimum target of four medals, which would equal their haul from Athens four years ago.

The women's quadruple scull team of Annie Vernon, Debbie Flood, Frances Houghton and Katherine Grainger are the reigning world champions and will be strong contenders while the men's four of Tom James, Steve Williams, Peter Reed and Andy Triggs Hodge were world champions in 2005 and 2006.

Simon Clegg, Team GB 2008 chef de mission, said: "I am delighted that the BOA will take 43 rowers in 12 boats to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games - the largest Team GB contingent since 1992 and reflective of the nation's recent increased strength in depth in this traditionally strong sport for us at the Olympic Games.

"I am sure the athletes - a mix of first-time athletes and experienced rowers - will be looking to continue their recent World Cup medal-winning performances out in Beijing.

"I wish them all the best in their final preparations and in competition at the Olympic Games."
