Rebecca Adlington beat Joanne Jackson in the 800m freestyle final at the Scottish National Championships in Glasgow.

The double Olympic champion from Mansfield took the victory in 8:16.81, just two seconds off her world record.

Jackson took six seconds off her personal best as she touched in 8:17.81 and secured the fourth fastest time in history.

The race saw the Olympic medallists swimming stroke for stroke and at the halfway point Jackson was just ahead of Adlington.

But Adlington moved away from Jackson in the final 50m to secure her place in the British team for next month's World Championships in Rome.

"I really didn't expect that time," Adlington said. "It is the fastest I have been without resting and that is great."

Portsmouth's Gemma Spofforth recorded her second British record of the Championships in the 200m backstroke, winning in 2:07.56.

The men's 400m freestyle saw David Davies finish a second ahead of Robbie Renwick in 3:48.69.

Renwick succeeded in putting himself in contention for Rome selection with a time of 3:49.92, half a second faster than Lewis Smith's time from the British Championships in Sheffield in March.

Hannah Miley claimed her second victory of the competition in the women's 200m individual medley in a time of 2:12.52.

Keri-Anne Payne put herself in contention for selection for the World Championships with a time of 2:13.41, which equalled her time from Sheffield.

Guildford's Marco Loughran achieved the qualifying standard, winning the men's 100m backstroke in 54.48 .

Joe Roebuck touched home in 1:58.25 to take the gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly and Fran Halsall took first place in the 50m freestyle with a time of 24.59, just 0.06 seconds off her personal best.

Louise Henley took the title in the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:10.47 while the men's 50m breaststroke saw Chris Jones home first in 28.53.
