German football's 'nearly-man' Bernd Schneider has quit the game after failing to recover from a back injury.
The 35-year-old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder suffered the injury in April 2008, missed the European Championships and - after over a year out - was advised to quit by doctors.
Schneider earned 81 caps for Germany but never won any titles in a 16-year career that included a decade at Leverkusen.
He has runners-up medals from the 2002 World Cup, 2000 and 2002 Bundesliga championships, 2002 and 2008 German Cups and the 2002 Champions League.
"Ever since I got injured I have had health problems," Schneider said in an official club statement.
"My decision has not been taken lightly but, after the recommendation of the club's medical staff, I have decided to quit.
"It was a hard choice but I have to think about my family and follow the advice of my doctors."
Schneider started his career at Carl Zeiss Jena and spent a season at Eintracht Frankfurt before joining Leverkusen in 1999, making his international debut that season.
