British and Irish Lions coach Ian McGeechan made five changes and named an all-Welsh front row on Thursday for Saturday's second Test against South Africa in Pretoria.
Giant England lock Simon Shaw (pictured) was called up to bolster the pack and Irishmen Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald replaced full-back Lee Byrne and winger Ugo Monye.
The Lions scrum was given a torrid time in last week's 26-21 first Test defeat in Durban and it was no surprise that tighthead Phil Vickery and hooker Lee Mears were replaced by Adam Jones and Matthew Rees.
"We didn't want to make too many changes if we could, because we've had a group of players who have been working very well together," McGeechan said.
"There were a number of close calls. It's all about trying to hold on to as many pluses as you can, while also being able to adapt tactically."
Jones will have to perform markedly better than Vickery against Springbok loosehead Tendai Mtawarira, The Beast, who delivered a man of the match performance.
Vickery and Mears dropped out of the 22 altogether as Ross Ford covers hooker off the bench and big prop Andrew Sheridan has recovered from a back injury to join the replacements.
McGeechan also drafted in the experienced Shaw, the only member of the squad to tour South Africa with the 1997 Lions but now winning his first Lions Test cap, in place of Welshman Alun-Wyn Jones, who dropped to the bench.
"I think it's his 18th time in a Lions jersey and I'm delighted for him," McGeechan said. "He's a very experienced player, and well respected around the world. He's obviously a player who we feel can do a very good job for us on Saturday."
Byrne, who went off with a foot injury in Durban, was replaced by Kearney and Fitzgerald came in Monye, who pays the price for spilling the ball twice when the tryline beckoned in the first Test.
Last season's world player of the year Shane Williams did enough in Tuesday's draw with the emerging Springboks to secure a place on the bench and Monye dropped out of the 22.
British and Irish Lions team to face South Africa:
15-Rob Kearney, 14-Tommy Bowe, 13-Brian O'Driscoll, 12-Jamie Roberts, 11-Luke Fitzgerald, 10-Stephen Jones, 9-Mike Phillips; 8-Jamie Heaslip, 7-David Wallace, 6-Tom Croft, 5-Paul O'Connell, 4-Simon Shaw, 3-Adam Jones, 2-Matthew Rees, 1-Gethin Jenkins.
Replacements: 16-Ross Ford, 17-Andrew Sheridan, 18-Alun-Wyn Jones, 19-Martyn Williams, 20-Harry Ellis, 21-Ronan O'Gara, 22-Shane Williams.

I agree with the front row selection, the welsh boys did well last week after Vickery had a torrid time of it. Shaw to give us a bit more physicality in the 2nd row is a good shout as well.
I suppose the only thing I have issue with is the inclusion of Shane Williams in the squad, as he's been below par for a long time. On his day, the guy is a welsh god, but those talents that won him IRB player of the year 2008 have been in hiding for a long time. I'd have demoted Monye to the bench for Fitzgerald, as Monye has a better chance of dealing with the physicality of the 'Boks than Williams will.
What is done is done though, so all that is left is to get behind our Lions and hope they can level the series to give us a fitting climax come next weekend.
TRUFFTASTIC- GO AND CLIMB BACK UNDER THE ROCK YOU CAME FROM. YOUR THE TIT
sugruejames55, oh you all upset , think we better keep on picking on him, maybe his mummy will stop him playing with us. By the way how is she , she had a nasty cough this morning, something with her swallow. Go see your father he likes sucking balls.
i agree with 51, they were some mighty fine tackles and he will definately learn from it.
Lets hope Shane Williams will be at his very best when he comes on. When he's on fire he's amazing!
ye can all suck my foxy balls
Monye should have been at least on the bench, absolute terrible decision.seems to be the scapegoat. cant blame him for outstanding cover tackling by the boks, shabby man management
ok jrg 26,u caught me on that 1,mearly saying that with a bulkier back row, think we shud dominate scrum time, hope they dont plan to replace gethin with sheridan, hopefully they plan to move gethin over and bring jones off after 60,he is alot fitter but wont go 4 80 mins.also if jones isint playing that well at fly half give o gara 40 mins, cud be a slight risk tho with his defence,i see he got flattened in the emerging springbox game as if he werent there, but he is a beter kicker of the ball
pjenkx, you really are a silly little boy aren`t, you watching the game while mummy gives you bitty, the other tit in the way of what was going on in the match. You say the Welsh are letting you down, get a life its getting boring, on a lighter note, surejames and loise have found each other, what a match made in heaven two tits togeather. They make a nice pair of pups togeather.
Can anyone tell me how long Lee Byrne is out for because i think he is a great player
barbara.craddock - thanks very much for the explanation
To Cartman regarding the crowds - or lack of - the regional games have been against teams missing their key men - in the case of the Sharks for example 10 first team players were missing. Locally they are aware and turned off. Secondly the price of the tickets here is very expensive and thirdly SA rugby is about the Super 14, which the Bulls won this year and most importantly the Tri Nations which starts soon. You won't see any empty seats for those matches.
Great selection my the lions glad to see shane made the bench what a sub to come on
powell is a danky what are you thinking
Oops, did i touch a nerve ptohej? Correct me if i'm wrong, but isnt this page all about opinions? Of which we all have one.
To echo the wise words of neil p, if you cant say something constructive, dont say anything. After all, its better to remain quiet and look a fool than to open your mouth and prove it beyond all doubt.

Good selection would have liked to seen rog on from the start one change id make ....come on the loins
Mthomson1968. Hey mate, I am not pro or against anyone, just pro the Lions and wish we would all drop our Nationalistic views and get behind OUR team. But Mr pubescant Segrue started it!! I do wish more of the Welsh team had turned up in form though, still think we could do with a firing Martin Williams and a rampaging Powell. Also Shane Williams in 2005/6/7 form would be a massive affensive threat. Shame Johnny Wilkinson is so bloody injury prone!!
if you didn't see it in the 6 nations already that is. Moron.
By your logic garyhawkings who's Spies?
Heaslip is doing fabtastic work to just keep Spies quiet. With more go forward that will be created by this pack on Saturday you'll see what he can do.
jrg 26 - it was not all down to Vickery at all - the "Beast" was boring in illegally for a lot of the scrummaging - the NZ ref just either missed it, ignored it or allowed it..yes the scrum was better when Jones came on - but did you notice the beast was penalised a lot more! - it is also because Jones is a smaller prop than VIckery and therefore was able to keep low.
