Mayweather-Marquez in September

The hotly anticipated welterweight fight between American Floyd Mayweather Jr and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez has been rescheduled for September 19.

BOXING Floyd Mayweather - 0

Initially set for July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the non-title 12-round bout was postponed earlier this month after Mayweather suffered a rib injury during training.

The flamboyant 32-year-old, an undefeated five-division world champion, has since received clearance from doctors that he can compete on the revised date, three days after Mexican Independence Day, at the same venue.

"I am relieved to be cleared to fight as I was already looking forward to getting back in the ring," Mayweather (39-0, 25 knockouts) said in a statement.

"September 19 is a great weekend for boxing and all of my fans, of which there are many Mexicans too, can hold on to their hats and sombreros when I get back in to the ring and show them what they have been missing these past 18 months.

"I will destroy Marquez and reclaim my rightful place as boxing's pound-for-pound king all in one night."

Mayweather, already accepted as one of the greatest boxers of any era, has not fought since his 10th round stoppage of Britain's Ricky Hatton in a WBC welterweight title bout in December 2007.

Marquez, a Mexico City native who has a 50-4-1 record with 37 knockouts, was delighted to hear the fight had been rescheduled.

"I am happy that Mayweather has been cleared to fight and we can get down to business on September 19," said the 35-year-old, a five-times world champion.

"This weekend is not just an important weekend for boxing but even more so for all of the Mexican and Mexican-American people I will be fighting for who will have a great reason to celebrate my win over Mayweather."

  1. I agree with lance. Mayweather said he wants mosely in 2 or 3 fights, that will make mosely nearly 40. :S. Think cotto will beat pacquiao though ( if its at 147).

  2. If Pacquiao is going to fight on 17th October 2009, then there is a possibility that Pacman-Mayweather fight is not going to happen because Mayweather can't rest and start training in just 1 month.

    PACMAN FTW!!!!!!

  3. Mayweather fought De La Hoya who's not a little guy. I agree that Mayweather - Moseley would be a good fight, but there's no denying that Pacquiao is the one everyone wants to see.
